Chapter 24 - The Fifty-Minute Protocol

The Meridian Tower shuddered. It was not a physical earthquake, but the deep, mechanical groan of high-voltage industrial breakers tripping in cascade throughout the sixty-story skyscraper. Above them, emergency strobes bathed the executive corridors in amber, while the climate control fans spun down into deafening silence.
"They've severed the primary grid connection from the street," Vance said, scrambling to his feet as the secondary monitors flickered out one by one. "Sterling's syndicate isn't waiting for the timer. They know if Chimera decompresses, their offshore ghost accounts will be stripped bare and broadcast to every regulatory agency on earth."
"Then they're already inside the private fiber loop," Julian said, stepping up to the master console. His fingers flew across the mechanical keyboard, his muscle memory taking over where fear had tried to take root. He bypassed Vance's administrative credentials and injected his own custom shell program—the very algorithmic framework he had honed during late nights in his cramped dorm room.
`ACCESS GRANTED: KERNEL_OVERRIDE_MERCER`
A schematic of Meridian Tower materialized in wireframe green. Three elevators had been locked out at the fortieth floor, but the heavy freight lift—the one rated for industrial machinery—was descending toward the sub-basement at maximum velocity.
"Tactical team," Vance muttered, his face gray. "They're coming for the core drives."
"Let them come," Julian replied, not looking up. "They think they're hunting an algorithm. They don't understand that the algorithm is hunting them."
With three sharp keystrokes, Julian reversed the polarity of the magnetic braking system on the freight elevator. High above, a muffled shriek of tearing steel echoed down the concrete shafts. The freight lift’s descent halted violently between floors forty-four and forty-five, triggering the emergency pneumatic clamps with a shudder that vibrated through the floorboards under their feet.

"That bought us time," Julian said, grabbing the encrypted flash drive from the terminal slot. "Where is the physical junction for Project Chimera?"
Vance pointed toward the reinforced airlock at the rear of the vault—a door made of six-inch tungsten plate, covered in twenty years of dust. "Beneath the bedrock. The old cold-war subterranean bunker. Your father refused to build it anywhere near the public internet."
