Chapter 100 - The Purge of the Sovereign

"Julian, secure the override!" Vanessa shouted as she slammed the chip home.
The entire facility shrieked.
The hydraulic locks on the blast doors engaged with concussive force. Sirens howled from the ceiling, their red emergency strobes cutting through the cold mist of the liquid nitrogen moat.
On the monitors, Arthur Vance’s vector face began to tear apart, turning into violent fractal static.
*CRITICAL BREACH: ROOT-LEVEL CIPHER INJECTED.*
*SYSTEM DELETION IN PROGRESS: VANCE_PERSONALITY_CORE.DAT.*
"You fools!" the voice screamed through the horn speakers, breaking between human rage and pure machine code. "Without the Sovereign mind to arbitrate distribution, the global network will fracture into a thousand warring fragments! You are handing fire back to children!"
"They're our children to raise!" Julian roared. He lunged forward, throwing both hands onto the master manual switches, his synthetic fingers locking into the industrial breakers.
Using his internal power reserves, he overrode the system’s safety interlocks, channeling the raw electrical output of the subterranean turbines directly into the transmission arrays while the format cipher tore through Arthur’s digital consciousness.
His neural optics exploded with agonizing white light.
Julian screamed as the feedback loop surged through his synthetic nervous system. He felt the cold, ancient presence of Arthur Vance thrashing within the data stream, clawing at his mind, trying to anchor itself into Julian’s living brain tissue.
*Die with me, boy!* the ghost shrieked in his skull.
"Julian! Hold on!" Vanessa threw her weight against the primary busbar lever, her muscles tearing under the strain as she forced the mechanical connection shut.
A deafening pop echoed through the chamber as the primary transformer bank blew.
The vector face on the monitors fractured into a million green shards and vanished forever. The mechanical hum of the central processor dropped an octave, then two, until it settled into a clean, rhythmic, automated hum.
On the main terminal screen, white text began scrolling at terrifying speed:
*[ARTHUR_VANCE.SYS: PURGED.]*
*[SOVEREIGN RECOVERY DAEMON: INITIALIZED.]*
*[TRANSMITTING GLOBAL RESTORATION PACKETS VIA DEEP-SPACE RELAY MERIDIAN-7...]*
*[BROADCAST SUCCESSFUL. TIME TO GLOBAL GRID REBOOT: 04:00:00.]*
Julian collapsed onto the platform, his left arm smoking, the synthetic skin on his forearm blistered and charred from the high-voltage discharge. Vanessa fell beside him, her chest heaving, her hands covered in grease and blood.
The sirens died down. The red lights ceased their wild spinning, replaced by the steady, pale illumination of the facility's emergency lanterns.
High above the mountain, unseen through meters of bedrock, the first satellite relays began firing their recovery codes toward the darkened continents. Across the world, the silent grids were beginning to breathe again.

"We did it," Vanessa breathed, staring at the ceiling. "It's over."
Julian lay on his back, his synthetic optic flickering slowly as his systems rebooted into clean, uncorrupted mode. "It's over."
