Chapter 95 - The Ghost in the Transceiver

The armor-piercing round shattered the pressurized fuel line. An instant later, hot exhaust gases ignited the spray, turning the lead vehicle into an expanding fireball that rolled three times across the median, smashing the second truck into the concrete barrier.
The third vehicle braked hard, tires screaming against the asphalt, before reversing behind a stalled freight truck to break line of sight.
Julian slid back into the cab, his chest burning, his cybernetic forearm radiating heat from the sustained power surge. Vanessa was gripping the steering wheel so hard her knuckles were white, her eyes locked on the gray stretch of empty road ahead.
"Did you get them?" she asked, her voice cracking.
"Bought us thirty minutes," Julian said, wiping grit from his teeth. "They're hunting in packs. Which means the command structure didn't completely dissolve when Valerie went down. Marcus Sterling is dead, but his commanders have orders."
As they crossed the Rhine into the dense pine forests of the Black Forest, the truck’s analog radio transceiver—a dusty CB unit mounted under the glovebox—crackled violently.
Static hissed through the small paper speaker, rising in pitch until it formed a rhythmic, metallic pulse.
*Three short beats. Three long beats. Three short beats.*
Then, a voice broke through the white noise. It was distorted by distance and low signal strength, but the cadence was unmistakable. Cold. Measured. Aristocratic.
"Julian. Vanessa. Do not continue to Facility Omega."
Vanessa gasped, nearly dropping her hands from the wheel. "Mom?"
Julian leaned forward, his fingers tightening on the dashboard until the plastic cracked. "Eleanor. Where are you broadcasting from?"
"From where your father should have died thirty years ago," Eleanor Vance’s voice crackled through the speaker. "Listen to me carefully, both of you. Facility Omega is a trap. Arthur never built it to restore the network. He built it as a slaughterhouse."
"You lied to us about Valerie," Julian said, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper. "You told me she was dead in 2012. You let her become Arthur's living weapon."
"I did what was required to preserve the line!" Eleanor snapped, the static warping her voice into a ghostly rasp. "Valerie was unstable from the moment of the synthesis trials. She believed the only way to heal the world was total cremation. But Omega... Omega is where Arthur stored the third component. If you plug that drive into the central core, you won't restore humanity's servers. You will initiate Phase Two."
"What is Phase Two?" Vanessa demanded, leaning toward the mic.
The radio buzzed, the signal decaying into a high-pitched carrier whine.

"...The Sovereign Sovereign..." Eleanor's voice faded into the static. "...Not a program... It is an upload... Arthur didn't die... He is waiting..."
The frequency died completely, leaving only the dull, mechanical thrum of the diesel engine.
