Chapter 17 - The Boardroom Coup

Eight o'clock the following morning.

The top floor of Meridian Dynamics did not smell of gunpowder or panic anymore. The shattered glass had been replaced by rapid-response maintenance crews, the air was filtered, and the massive conference table was surrounded by the full board of directors of Meridian Dynamics.

These were the old-money titans: fund managers holding billions in assets, venture capitalists, retired senators, and institutional investors. Every one of them was staring at the massive projection wall at the end of the room.

Marcus Sterling was on the line via high-definition secure satellite video from Vanguard’s fortified penthouse on Park Avenue.

Sterling looked disheveled. His tie was loosened, his hair was uncombed, and his eyes were bloodshot from a night spent watching his empire’s server architecture dissolve into white noise.

"Arthur," Sterling hissed through the speaker system, his voice crackling with desperate fury. "You think you can bury this? You think the SEC is going to let you operate after what you did last night? You unleashed a cyber weapon on my infrastructure! That’s an act of war!"

Julian, seated to the right of Arthur Vance, leaned toward his microphone and tapped the touchscreen in front of him.

"It wasn't an act of war, Marcus," Julian said. "It was an automated quarantine protocol. And you triggered it yourself."

On the boardroom projection wall, Julian brought up the digital audit trail.

Line by line, the screen displayed Vanguard’s illicit connections: twenty-seven offshore shell companies funneling stolen Meridian trade secrets, dummy invoices paid directly to crooked patent examiners, and the encrypted wire transfers that Marcus Sterling had authorized to finance the physical breach of Meridian’s tower.

"Every single byte of this data was mirrored to the Federal Reserve, the Department of Justice, and the international banking compliance consortium at 11:59 PM," Julian explained to the stunned board members. "While Vanguard was busy trying to compromise our servers, their own internal logging daemon was systematically validating and notarizing their entire history of financial crimes onto an immutable public ledger."

Arthur Vance stood up, adjusting his suit jacket, looking at Sterling on the monitor with absolute coldness.

"Marcus," Vance said. "Ten minutes ago, trading was halted on Vanguard Global. Your credit lines with JPMorgan and Deutsche Bank have been frozen. And as of sixty seconds ago, the Meridian Board of Directors voted unanimously to execute an emergency predatory buyout of Vanguard’s remaining liquidated physical assets for pennies on the dollar."

Sterling’s face turned an ugly shade of purple. "You can't buy Vanguard! I founded this company! I built it!"

"You didn't build anything," Julian said, his voice cutting through Sterling's rage like a scalpel. "You stole it. And now, you're bankrupt."
