Chapter 76 - The Echo of 1994

The silence in the bunker was suffocating, broken only by the rhythmic clicking of the magnetic tapes. Julian stood up slowly from the console, keeping his weapon holstered, his eyes locked onto the scarred mirror image standing twenty feet above him.

"You're the original," Julian said, his mind furiously connecting thirty years of redacted records, hidden bank accounts, and David’s obsessive control over their family. "Project Chimera wasn't an algorithm. It began as human cloning combined with direct neural mapping."

"Very perceptive, copy," the scarred man replied, stepping down the iron spiral staircase with slow, deliberate precision. "David called it 'Genetic Continuity.' When his firstborn son—me—developed terminal degenerative neuropathy at age six, our loving father didn't accept defeat. He harvested my bone marrow, mapped my neural pathways onto silicon substrates, and grew a clean vessel. You."

Vanessa took a step back, her face pale as a ghost. "Then... Julian wasn't meant to inherit Meridian. He was meant to be..."

"A spare tire," the duplicate spat, reaching the bunker floor. "A biological flash drive waiting for David to upload my reconstructed consciousness when my original body finally collapsed. But David grew ambitious. He realized my neural lattice, when integrated with an artificial neural network, could predict global market trends and breach international security systems better than any computer ever built."

"So he locked you down here," Eleanor said, lowering her rifle slightly, her eyes filled with a mixture of horror and maternal revulsion. "He turned you into the core processor of Tower Nine."

"He thought he locked me away," the scarred Julian said, a cold smile touching his lips. "He thought I was just an engine. But while he was parading my clean clone through prestigious universities, pretending to be a proud corporate titan, I was writing rootkits into every single asset Meridian acquired."

He turned his silver-tinted gaze onto Vanessa. "And when you tore up his job offer that afternoon in the courtyard, Vanessa, you didn't just ruin his career. You disrupted the precise biological synchronization David needed to initiate the body swap. You broke the sequence. And you gave me the opening I needed to take the grid."

"What do you want?" Julian asked, his voice steady despite the seismic revelation tearing through his concept of identity.

May you like

"I want what was stolen from me," the original replied. "I want the world to run on the system I built. And I need your neural architecture to finalize the deployment."
