Chapter 59 - Blood Against Bone

Caleb moved first.
His speed was staggering—a perfect physical translation of Julian’s own kinetic capability. He closed the gap in a fraction of a second, his right fist driving toward Julian’s throat with lethal intent.
Julian deflected the strike with an inward forearm block, the impact vibrating through the bones of his arm like a steel pipe striking stone. Without pausing, Julian countered with a short, brutal elbow to Caleb’s ribs. Caleb absorbed the blow with an inhuman lack of reaction, spinning inside Julian’s guard and slamming a heel-palm strike directly into Julian’s solar plexus.
Julian stumbled back three steps, the air knocked from his lungs, his boots skidding across the polished floor.
"You feel pain," Caleb observed, tilting his head with genuine scientific curiosity. "Fascinating. Mother said your neural pathways were compromised by stress and trauma. Every time she locked you in the cellar, your cortisol levels degraded your reaction time by four percent."
"She told you that?" Julian gasped, circling to the left, his tactical mind analyzing the duplicate’s cadence.
"She documented everything," Caleb said, advancing with smooth, terrifying economy of motion. "Every time you cried at night. Every time you tried to shield Vanessa from her anger. You think suffering made you strong, Julian? It made you slow. It created hesitation."
Caleb lunged again, a blinding combination of high-low strikes designed to fracture the jaw and collapse the trachea. Julian blocked the first two, took a glancing blow to his left shoulder, and then dropped beneath Caleb’s roundhouse kick, driving his shoulder into Caleb’s hip and tackling the duplicate violently onto the server floor.
They crashed into the base of a quantum rack. Cables tore loose, sparking violently in the cold air.
Caleb’s fingers locked around Julian’s throat, his grip crushing, merciless. "I am the perfected version," Caleb hissed into Julian’s face, their identical eyes locked inches apart. "I am what you were supposed to be."
Julian grabbed Caleb’s wrist with his left hand, fighting for breath as darkness encroached on the edges of his vision. But his right hand didn't reach for Caleb’s throat.
Julian reached to his tactical belt, pulling the small, metallic stylus he had carried since the graduation stage—the Meridian Dynamics executive override key Vance had slipped into his pocket.
"You have my face," Julian choked out, his vision swimming with red. "You have my DNA. But you don't have my memories."
Julian slammed the sharp stylus not into Caleb’s flesh, but directly into the optical sensor of the biometric console beneath their feet.

A high-voltage surge pulsed through the metal casing of the floor rack. Caleb screamed—an instinctive, human sound of pure agony—as twelve thousand volts of feedback discharged through his hands, hurling him backward across the room.
