Chapter 87 - Sovereign Dominion

The transport departed the Île Rousseau under the cover of an artificial radar blackout. The convoy sped along the darkened lakeside highways toward the French border, passing through the quiet village of Meyrin before approaching the sprawling, utilitarian research complex of CERN.
To the outside world, the facility was a testament to international scientific cooperation. But as Colonel Brandt’s team bypassed the civilian security gates with biometric override cards issued under French diplomatic clearance, Julian saw the real perimeter.
Dozens of elite tactical contractors patrolled the fenced compounds, wearing unmarked black combat vests and carrying specialized electromagnetic pulse rifles designed specifically for neutralizing digital combatants. Heavy barricades shielded the entrance to Access Shaft 4—a freight elevator dropping over one hundred meters into the bedrock beneath the Franco-Swiss border.
"This is where David made his first contract," Julian observed as the heavy industrial elevator groaned, beginning its slow descent into the earth. The air grew perceptibly colder, tasting of copper, liquid nitrogen, and wet limestone.
"1987," Valerie said, leaning against the steel cage wall. "David realized that biological neural tissue was the only medium capable of surviving the data density of real-time global monitoring. He tried to build synthetic chips, but they burned out under heat friction. That's why he turned to the cloning programs. He needed human brains with specialized synaptic densities."
"He bred us to be processors," Vanessa said bitterly, her hand clenched in her coat pocket.
"He bred us to be gods, Vanessa," Valerie corrected sharply. "He was just too small-minded to realize what he had created. He wanted corporate stock and political blackmail. He wanted to sit in boardrooms and dictate foreign policy to corrupt congressmen. He couldn't grasp that the code he wrote had the power to make the nation-state completely obsolete."
The elevator shuddered and came to an abrupt halt.
The doors slid open with a hiss of pressurized air. Ahead of them lay a subterranean cavern carved out of solid gneiss rock, dominated by a colossal cylindrical structure that stretched endlessly into the darkness in both directions. Frost clung to the massive cryogenic conduits that piped liquid helium around the circumference of the particle accelerator.
Branching off from the main ring was an unmapped tunnel, sealed by a massive blast door made of reinforced depleted uranium. Over the doorway, etched into the metal, was the faded emblem: *PROJECT SOVEREIGN - LEVEL ZERO.*
"Welcome to the heart of the machine," Valerie murmured.
As they walked toward the blast door, Julian fell half a step back, brushing his arm against Vanessa’s. In the dark tunnel, shielded from Valerie’s sight, he pressed a tiny glass ampoule into Vanessa’s palm.
She glanced down, her eyes widening slightly in shock. It was the neural disruptor Eleanor had given Julian before they fled the Atlantic seaboard—a one-shot chemical catalyst capable of paralyzing synthetic synapses for sixty seconds.

Julian didn't look at her, his lips barely moving as he whispered under the roar of the cryogenic pumps: *"When the terminal links... don't hesitate."*
Vanessa slipped the ampoule into her sleeve, her heart pounding against her ribs like a trapped bird.
