Chapter 56 - Black Water Ingress

"Target contact," Miller announced in a clipped, low whisper.

Julian stood up immediately, moving to the pilot's station. On the thermal imaging monitor, a monolithic silhouette emerged from the oceanic clutter twelve miles ahead.

The *Aegis Sovereign* was immense. Shaped like an angular, semi-submersible naval carrier, it lacked the traditional superstructure of a yacht. Instead, it was dominated by three massive geodesic domes housing satellite arrays, surrounded by high-walled perimeter catwalks, automated point-defense gun mounts, and a rear helipad lit by recessed yellow landing beacons.

"They haven't painted us with fire-control radar yet," Miller said, flicking switches to cut the launch’s active sonar. "We're riding the trough of the waves. But once we hit the two-mile mark, their acoustic sensors will pick up the cavitation of our screws."

"They won't fire," Julian said. He plugged his datapad into the interceptor's short-range directional antenna. "I'm broadcasting my biometrics on the standard Meridian handshake protocol. The ship’s automated defense grid is running the Chimera operating core. It recognizes the signal."

On the dashboard, the status monitor turned from amber to a steady, rhythmic blue.

*BEACON DETECTED: ADMINISTRATOR MERCER, J.*

*ACCESS STATUS: CONDITIONAL. VESSEL CONCURRENTLY OCCUPIED BY ADMINISTRATOR MERCER, J.*

*PROTOCOL: ARBITRATION ACTIVE. LETHAL PERIMETER INTERDICTION SUSPENDED.*

"It worked," Miller muttered, an edge of awe in his voice. "The defense grid thinks we're the duplicate coming back from a patrol run. Automated guns are standing down."

"It won't fool the human security on the decks," Julian said, checking his tactical rig. "Eleanor has private contractors aboard. They'll have visual confirmation within ninety seconds."

"We don't need ninety seconds," Miller replied grimly. "We’re going in through the stern wet-dock."

Miller cut the main turbines. The interceptor glided into the shadow of the monstrous vessel, coasting on silent electric thrusters. The sheer wall of the *Aegis Sovereign*'s black-painted steel rose thirty feet above them, dripping with sea spray. At the waterline, an automated hydraulic gate designed for deploying tender craft was cycling through a standard diagnostic purge.

"Hold on," Miller commanded.

With a masterclass maneuver of throttle and rudder, Miller drove the nose of the stealth interceptor directly into the narrowing gap of the opening dock. The hull scraped against the rubber bumpers with a muffled groan. Water churned around them as the interior chamber of the wet-dock engaged its drainage pumps.

Before the chamber had fully drained, Julian kicked the launch's canopy open.

"Vanessa, stay behind Miller's shoulder," Julian ordered, vaulting over the gunwale onto the metal catwalk. "David, you have the internal schematics?"

"I'm patching them directly to your retinas now, son," David’s voice crackled through the bone-conduction earpieces. "The stateroom Eleanor was transmitting from is on Deck Four, starboard observation lounge. But the duplicate isn't there anymore. He just accessed the Level Two server nexus."

"He's trying to purge the original biometric database before I can reach the console," Julian realized instantly. "Miller, secure the stairwell. Vanessa, you're on data extraction."

Julian sprinted up the industrial gangway, his boots ringing against the steel grating as the alarms inside the *Aegis Sovereign* began to wail.
