Chapter 5 - The Audit of Lies

Vanessa’s smile froze, shattering into shards of disbelief. "What did you say?"

"I said no. Under no circumstances will you ever work at Meridian Dynamics. Not in marketing. Not in administration. Not even cleaning the server rooms."

"You selfish, arrogant little bastard!" Vanessa lunged forward, her fingers hooked into claws, but Marcus Cole smoothly slid into her path, his broad frame blocking her entirely.

"Back away, miss," Marcus said, his voice dropping into the quiet, menacing register of corporate security. "You are currently harassing an executive officer of Meridian Dynamics in a public space. If you make physical contact with Mr. Mercer, campus security will detain you for assault."

"He's my brother!" Vanessa screamed, thrashing against Marcus’s solid arm. "He can't talk to me like that! Tell him, Mom! Tell him!"

Mom was practically vibrating with rage. "Julian Mercer! You listen to me right now! You are going to apologize to your sister, you are going to take her to your new office tomorrow, and you are going to share that bonus! If your father were alive, he would be sickened by what you've become!"

"If Dad were alive," I said, stepping past Marcus so I was looking Mom directly in her eyes, "he would have asked Vanessa why she really lost her job at Apex."

The foyer went completely dead silent.

Vanessa’s thrashing instantly stopped. She went rigid, her mouth open, the color abandoning her face for the second time that afternoon.

Mom frowned, confused by the sudden shift in Vanessa's posture. "What are you talking about? Apex downsized! They had budget cuts! Vanessa told me all about their restructuring!"

"Is that what she told you?" I asked quietly.

"Julian, shut up!" Vanessa gasped, her voice no longer angry, but shrill with sheer panic. "Don't you dare! Don't you dare speak about that!"

"Why shouldn't I?" I pulled my smartphone from my breast pocket. "When Meridian Dynamics ran my background check last month, their security team conducted a standard perimeter assessment on my immediate family. They wanted to ensure there were no corporate espionage liabilities, no financial entanglements, and no reputational risks connected to my household."

Mom scoffed weakly. "And? Vanessa has a clean record!"

"Vanessa was not downsized," I said, reading directly from the encrypted security summary on my screen. "On March fourteenth, Vanessa Mercer was terminated from Apex Solutions for attempting to leak an internal client database to a rival PR firm in exchange for a fifteen-thousand-dollar referral kickback. Apex caught her on internal server logs, revoked her credentials, and only refrained from pressing felony charges because her division manager didn't want the bad press."

Mom turned her head slowly, looking at Vanessa with wide, horrified eyes. "Vanessa...? Is... is that true?"

Vanessa was shaking. "They framed me! It was a mistake! The IT guy set me up because I wouldn't go out with him!"

"Apex didn't stop there," I continued relentlessly. "They flagged your name in the regional corporate compliance registry. You didn't just lose your job, Vanessa. You were blacklisted from every major tech and marketing firm within a three-state radius. And do you know what you did two weeks ago?"

Vanessa stepped back, shaking her head frantically. "Stop it. Stop it!"

"Two weeks ago, you submitted an altered resume to Meridian Dynamics’ junior outreach department, using my university email address as an internal reference without my knowledge. You forged my recommendation."

Marcus Cole tapped his tablet and spoke in a clear, carrying voice. "Application ID eight-four-two. Flagged for fraud on May second. Candidate Vanessa Mercer was placed on the permanent Meridian corporate ban list fourteen days ago."

Mom stumbled back a step, her hand flying to her mouth. The illusion she had spent months constructing—the myth of her perfect, victimized daughter being crushed by an unfair world—crumbled to dust right in front of her.

"You... you lied to me?" Mom whispered to Vanessa. "You told me they gave your job to the CEO's nephew."

"They did! It's all connected! Mom, don't listen to him!" Vanessa wailed, but the lies were so paper-thin now that even Mom couldn't pretend not to see through them.

"I didn't expose you because I wanted to hurt you, Vanessa," I said, closing my phone and sliding it back into my pocket. "I didn't expose you because I didn't care. As long as you stayed out of my way, your failures were your own. But you stood in that hall, ripped up my offer letter, laughed in my face, and thought you could drag me down into the mud with you."

I adjusted my collar, took a deep breath of the crisp air, and looked at both of them with total clarity.
