Chapter 28 - The Siege of Meridian

A thunderous explosion rocked the bunker from above. The heavy steel door at the top of the iron staircase had been blown inward. The unmistakable rattle of suppressed automatic weapons fire echoed down the shaft, followed by the heavy, tactical footsteps of armored boots hitting the iron steps.

"They're through the upper perimeter!" Vance cried, panic completely unhinging him. He lunged toward a maintenance locker, searching for a weapon, but found only rusted wrenches and spare copper coils. "Julian, we have to seal the hexagonal hatch! If they get in here, none of us leave alive!"

Julian did not run for the door. He walked calmly to the central workstation and took his seat in the Architect’s chair.

"Arthur," Julian said without looking back. "Close the manual pressure valve by the door jamb. It will delay their cutting torches by five minutes."

Vance, terrified and operating on raw survival instinct, sprinted to the portal and hauled on an iron lever, engaging the hydraulic secondary deadbolts just as the first spray of armor-piercing bullets pinged harmlessly off the outer tungsten casing.

Julian slipped the titanium chronograph onto his wrist and set his hands on the console’s interface pads. Instead of a traditional keyboard, the surface consisted of capacitive bronze mesh that read the electrical conductivity of his fingertips.

Instantly, the monitors flared with lines of high-speed code moving faster than the human eye could process. Julian’s mind felt an immediate, razor-sharp surge of data. He wasn't just viewing the Meridian network; he was viewing the global monetary pipeline. He saw Marcus Sterling’s secret offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands, the encrypted routing nodes in Zurich, the ghost shell companies registered to his mother’s maiden name—everything was laid out before him like a transparent glass labyrinth.

Above the blast door, a high-temperature thermite charge ignited with a blinding sizzle. The steel around the edges of the hatch began to glow cherry red.
