Chapter 48 - Severing the Nerve

"You have no logical alternative, Julian," the machine droned. "If neither subject integrates, the failsafe detonates the pneumatic foundations beneath the city. Three million lives will descend into the geological fissure."

"Miller," Julian whispered, his eyes never leaving the pod. "Where is the thermal ordnance?"

Miller reached into his tactical vest, pulling out a heavy, cylindrical thermite canister. "I have two blocks. But Mr. Mercer, if we ignite these near the liquid nitrogen lines, the pressure blowout will seal this chamber forever. We'll never get back to the surface."

"We don't need to get back through the tunnel," Julian said. He pointed his light upward, toward the vaulted dome of the spherical chamber. "Look at the exhaust venting. Those are old pneumatic mail conduits that lead directly to the air-handling shafts of the old Meridian foundation. If we pop the vent seals, the draft will pull us straight up toward the surface street level."

"And the high-voltage breaker?" Vanessa asked, stepping beside him, her jaw set, the fear in her eyes replaced by something fierce and unyielding. "Someone has to hold that override to stop the detonation, right?"

"I’ll do it," Julian said.

"No," Vanessa said instantly. She grabbed his arm, her grip digging into his leather jacket with desperate strength. "You spent four years earning that degree. You spent your whole life being the good son, the genius, the one who was supposed to save this family. I spent my whole life being bitter, tearing down everything you built because I couldn't stand my own inadequacy."

"Vanessa, you don't know the voltage threshold—"

"I don't need to know the voltage threshold to hold a switch down!" she shouted, tears cutting paths through the grime on her face. "You told me earlier that I wanted you in the mud with me. Well, I’m done pulling you down, Julian. It’s my turn to hold the line."

Before Julian could react, the machine sensed the deviation in protocol.

The automated defense rings surrounding the core rotated with a piercing shriek. Four high-velocity flechette turrets deployed from the catwalk ceiling, their laser sights locking onto Miller’s chest.

"Move!" Miller roared, tackling Julian sideways onto the steel mesh decking just as a storm of steel flechettes ripped through the air, chewing the guardrail into jagged ribbons.

Vanessa didn't hesitate. She didn't scream. With an agility Julian had never seen in her, she threw herself down the service ladder leading to the lower high-voltage discharge deck beneath the core.

"Vanessa! Stop!" Julian screamed, struggling against Miller’s grip as flechettes pinged relentlessly off the steel plates above them.

"Set the thermite on the coolant lines, Miller!" Vanessa’s voice shouted from the abyss below, crackling through the industrial hum of four thousand amperes. "Do it now! I have my hands on the breaker!"
