Chapter 88 - The Shadow Assembly

The blast door groaned open, revealing a spherical chamber lined with hexagonal mirrors that reflected thousands of fiber-optic conduits running down into a central crystalline pedestal. Floating above the pedestal in a magnetic suspension field was an orb of black silicon, approximately the size of a human skull, pulsing with rhythmic, violet bioluminescence.

"The Sovereign Core," Valerie breathed, her voice dropping into reverent awe. "Constructed from synthetic graphene and cultured neural pathways grown from David’s original genetic baseline. It has been waiting thirty-two years for the full sequence."

The seven delegates from the obsidian table filed into the chamber behind them, their faces pale under the violet glow. They took their positions around the outer perimeter, standing behind automated terminals that began spinning up European sovereign debt ledgers.

"Admiral," Julian called out, turning toward the NATO representative. "You took an oath to defend sovereign territory. You're handing the keys to every missile silo and air defense grid in the Western hemisphere to an unhinged rogue clone."

The Admiral didn't look at Julian. "The current global order is dying, Mr. Vance. The democracies are bankrupt, the institutions are compromised, and the infrastructure is collapsing under its own weight. We need an absolute arbiter. An intelligence that cannot be bought, cannot be voted out, and cannot be blackmailed."

"She isn't an intelligence," Vanessa hissed. "She's a corporate monster with a god complex!"

"Enough," Valerie snapped. She unbuttoned her tailored jacket, revealing a port interface surgically grafted into the base of her neck—a sleek, silver-rimmed socket identical to the scar Julian carried from his childhood extraction.

She turned toward Julian, her eyes burning with an almost manic intensity. "Step onto the pedestal, Julian. Place your hands on the array alongside mine. Vanessa will complete the ground circuit."

Julian walked forward slowly. Every instinct honed in the fires of the New York siege screamed at him to draw a weapon, to break the perimeter, to run. But he knew that Valerie controlled the kill switches for half the continent. Running was no longer an option. The only way to kill the beast was from inside its stomach.

He stepped onto the cold metal pedestal. The magnetic field hummed against the fillings in his teeth, raising the hairs on his arms.

Valerie stood across from him, separated only by the floating black orb. She extended both hands, hovering them an inch above the vibrating surface of the silicon sphere.

"On three," Valerie whispered, her breath quickening. "One... two..."

Julian placed his palms against the surface.

An electric shock tore through his arms like liquid fire. His vision flashed violently into blinding white, and suddenly, he wasn't standing in a cavern beneath the Alps anymore. His consciousness was ripped violently upward, catapulted into a roaring ocean of pure, undiluted data.
