Chapter 23 - Sins of the Mother

The encrypted satellite phone in Julian’s blazer pocket buzzed violently. He reached into his coat, his eyes never leaving Vance, and answered without breaking his gaze.
"Julian?"
The voice on the other end was hysterical, breathless, and broken by static. It was Vanessa.
"Vanessa," Julian said, his tone devoid of warmth. "Did you call to tell me how unemployed we both are, or did your unemployment check bounce already?"
"Julian, please, shut up and listen to me!" she sobbed into the receiver. The arrogant sneer that had defined her face on the graduation lawn was entirely gone, replaced by pure, naked panic. "There are men here. In the house. They didn't knock, Julian. They tore the front door off the hinges with crowbars. Mom is locked in the master bedroom, screaming at them through the door, and they keep demanding 'the primary ledger'!"
Julian's hand tightened on the receiver until the plastic creaked. "Where are you, Vanessa?"
"I’m in the crawlspace beneath the kitchen pantry," she whispered, her breathing ragged. "I hid when I heard them shatter the front bay window. Julian, Mom gave them your old laptop. The one you left behind when you moved into the dorms. She told them everything they needed was on the hard drive. She... she told them that you set Marcus up! She sold you out to save her own skin!"
A cold clarity washed over Julian. Every petty cruelty, every sneer at family dinners, every time his mother had favored Vanessa while demanding that Julian surrender his academic stipends to cover their household expenses—it hadn't just been familial dysfunction. It had been calculated suppression. Evelyn had kept him poor, desperate, and pliable so he would never look closely at his father’s estate.
"Listen to me carefully, Vanessa," Julian said, his voice dropping into a razor-thin register that cut through her weeping. "The crawlspace has a sub-floor hatch behind the copper drainage stack. My father installed it in 2011. There is an iron latch beneath the insulation foam. Pull it, crawl into the storm conduit, and don't stop until you reach the municipal storm drain on Fourth Street."
"Julian, I'm scared—"
"You tore my life apart on the lawn without blinking an eye," Julian interrupted ruthlessly. "Now you either crawl through the dirt, or you wait for Marcus Sterling’s cleanup crew to find you. Choose."
He severed the call before she could answer.
Turning back to the monitor, Julian saw the countdown display tick down with inexorable momentum.

"Arthur," Julian commanded, his eyes turning to the CEO. "Unlock the sub-basement elevator. We're going to the root server. Now."
