Chapter 37 - The Ghost of 2012

Julian’s shoulder collided heavily with the central terminal housing. Pain flared white-hot through his collarbone, but his right hand shot out and gripped the cold, rectangular chassis of the Chimera core.
The drive was locked into its cradle by four pneumatic retaining pins. On the interface screen above it, a countdown was flashing: *DETACHMENT IN 28 SECONDS.*
Behind him, Valen let out a mechanical roar. The impostor had regained partial motor control, his eyes glowing with a faint, infrared internal diagnostic hue. He lunged across the tilted steel grating, his titanium-reinforced fingers tearing through the metal deck like cardboard as he hauled his massive frame toward Julian.
"You will not dismantle twelve years of architectural alignment!" Valen snarled, his voice a horrifying composite of David Mercer and a dozen digital modulators. "You are merely the son of a corpse!"
"And you're just a hard drive with teeth," Julian hissed.
He didn't try to enter an administrative override. He didn't try to hack the lock.
Instead, Julian reached into his breast pocket and pulled out the antique titanium wristwatch his father had given him on his tenth birthday—the one he had never taken off until today. He flipped the watch over, wedged the sharp edge of the titanium case-back into the drive cradle’s emergency manual eject slot, and twisted with all his strength.

The watch’s interior gear, precisely cut to a bespoke seven-sided gear pattern, matched the internal mechanical tumbler of the cradle.
It wasn't an ornament. It had never been just a watch. It was the physical key to the Chimera core’s manual eject mechanism—machined by David Mercer’s own hands in 2012, before he was murdered in Geneva.
The four retaining pins snapped back with a sharp mechanical hiss.
The crystalline drive, glowing with an internal, trapped luminescence of a billion cryptographic transactions, slid smoothly into Julian’s grasp.
Valen reached him. The impostor’s cold, metallic hand locked around Julian’s throat with the crushing force of a hydraulic press. Julian’s breath was cut off instantly. The world narrowed to a pinprick of dark, suffocating purple.
"Give... it... to me," Valen commanded, lifting Julian bodily off the deck with a single arm.
Julian couldn't breathe. His vision was fading. But his fingers were still wrapped around the crystalline drive.
With his remaining consciousness, Julian brought the sharp corner of the crystalline core down onto the exposed titanium weave of Valen’s scorched cheek—directly into the unshielded neural receiver port that had been blown open by the electrical arc.
"Data... overwrite," Julian gasped through his crushed windpipe.
The drive’s raw, unencrypted optical output discharged directly into Valen’s exposed neural bus.
Valen froze.
The impostor’s eyes dilated until the pupils consumed the entire iris. A sound tore from the machine’s throat that was neither human nor synthetic—it was the agonizing scream of thirty billion lines of concurrent code flooding an organic brain at light speed. Every account, every transaction, every stolen memory of David Mercer, and every sovereign secret contained within the Chimera matrix poured into Valen’s cognitive architecture in a single, catastrophic millisecond.
The grip on Julian’s throat released.
Julian dropped to the grating, gasping for air, clutching the drive against his chest as Valen stumbled backward, convulsing violently, his hands clawing at his own face, tearing away ribbons of synthetic skin as his neural processors melted from within.

"TEN SECONDS TO STRUCTURAL SEPARATION," the klaxon roared.
