Chapter 63 - The Severed Tether

The assault skiffs hit the water in tight formation, their automated point-defense systems tracking the heat plumes of the sinking carrier. High-caliber rounds chewed into the listing superstructure, shredding glass, aluminum, and radar radomes.
Julian and Vanessa sprinted down the flooded gangway toward the lower staging bays. Seawater was already sloshing knee-deep across the corrugated decking, black and frigid, carrying oil slicks and debris. The structural steel groaned in agony as the stern slipped deeper into the abyss, forcing the bow skyward at a brutal twenty-degree angle.
"Forward maintenance hatch!" Julian yelled, pointing toward a reinforced hydraulic bulkhead at the end of the corridor. "The *Sovereign* had an auxiliary deep-submergence launch tube designed for black-ops extraction. If Eleanor kept it fueled, it's our only way past those skiffs."
Vanessa reached the manual bypass first, throwing her entire weight into the locking wheel. "It’s encrypted! David’s override hit the vessel’s central nervous system—it’s locking down every escape vector!"
Julian slammed his wrist interface against the optical scanner beside the wheel. The crimson letters flashed again: *ACCESS DENIED. ARCHITECT AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.*
"He thinks he locked me out," Julian muttered between clenched teeth. He pulled his combat blade, slicing open the maintenance panel beneath the terminal. With bare fingers, he stripped two copper leads from the auxiliary diagnostic bus, bridging them across his handheld emulator. "He wrote the lattice architecture thirty years ago. But I rewrote the core protocols three hours ago on Floor Fifty-Eight."
He began typing one-handed, his fingers moving with frantic, mechanical speed. He didn't try to crack David’s encryption; instead, he fed a recursive logic bomb into the local security processor—the exact same bug Vanessa had unwittingly exploited years ago when she tore apart his first credential set.
The terminal screen shuddered. The crimson text fragmented, flickering violently between error dumps before switching to a blinking amber prompt: *SYSTEM FAULT: MANUAL PURGE ENGAGED.*
With a deep hydraulic hiss, the heavy hatch disengaged and swung inward.
Inside the bay sat the *Nautilus-IV*, a compact, matte-black submersible built for high-pressure reconnaissance. Its reactor hummed quietly on trickle standby.
"Get in the pilot couch!" Julian ordered as the metal walls around them warped under the crushing pressure of the incoming tide.
Vanessa climbed inside, immediately flipping switches across the avionics panel. "Tube is flooding! The dreadnought just fired a seismic sonar pulse—they know we're in the forward compartment!"
Behind them, the gangway buckled. A wall of freezing water exploded through the upper vents, accompanied by the red-tracer fire of automated boarding drones cutting through the ceiling. Julian dove into the submersible’s narrow airlock, slamming the hatch shut and spinning the inner lock just as thousands of gallons of sea water slammed against the observation viewport.
"Vent the ballast!" Julian shouted through the cabin. "Blow the tube doors now!"

Vanessa hit the emergency jettison. Compressed gas detonated with a muffled thud, blowing the outer tube covers into the open ocean. A split second later, the *Nautilus-IV* was sucked violently into the churning black depths of the Atlantic.
