Chapter 57 - Mirror on the Deck

The interior corridors of the *Aegis Sovereign* were not designed for luxury; they resembled the pressurized halls of a naval warship, lined with exposed fiber-optic trunks, pneumatic conduits, and brushed titanium bulkheads.
Red tactical lights swept across the ceiling as sirens pulsed in a slow, rhythmic cadence.
Julian moved with fluid, lethal precision. At the junction of Deck Three, two private security contractors in black composite armor rounded the corner, carbines raised.
"Halt! Ident—"
Julian didn't hesitate. He closed the distance in two explosive strides, slapping the barrel of the lead guard’s rifle aside, driving the heel of his palm upward into the man’s chin. The contractor’s head snapped back, his weapon clattering to the deck. Julian spun, catching the second man by the throat and slamming him violently against the bulkhead terminal.
The terminal flashed:
*BIOMETRIC CONFIRMED: ADMINISTRATOR MERCER, J.*
*RESTRICTED ACCESS GRANTED.*
The unconscious guards slid to the floor. Behind Julian, Miller and Vanessa advanced, Miller sweeping the rear corridor with his sidearm while Vanessa clutched the encrypted data drive Julian had given her.
"The server core is through those pressure doors," Miller said, nodding toward a pair of eight-inch-thick vault doors at the end of the hall. "I'll hold this junction. If their security force brings up reinforcements from the engine room, I’ll turn this corridor into a funnel."
"Julian," Vanessa called out as he reached the vault interface.
Julian stopped, looking back over his shoulder.
"Don't hesitate," she said, her voice steady, her eyes fierce. "He might look like you, but he isn't you. Put him down."
Julian nodded once. He pressed his right palm against the biometric glass of the vault door.
A robotic voice echoed through the ceiling:
*PRIMARY ADMINISTRATOR VERIFIED. DUAL-PRESENCE CONFLICT DETECTED IN SECTOR ZERO. INITIATING ARBITRATION ENTRY.*
The heavy locking bolts retracted with the sound of a closing bank vault, and the steel doors parted with a pressurized hiss.
Julian stepped inside.
The server nexus was vast, cold, and silent save for the deafening roar of liquid nitrogen cooling pumps. Racks of quantum processing units stretched twenty feet into the air, their blue and violet LEDs reflecting off the polished black floor.
Standing in the center of the chamber, illuminated by the cold light of a holographic terminal, was the duplicate.
He had removed his navy-blue jacket. He wore a crisp white dress shirt, his sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing arms that were identical in build, tone, and scar tissue to Julian’s own. He turned around slowly, a calm, clinical smile stretching across his lips.
May you like
"You really came all this way," the duplicate said. His voice was an exact acoustic clone of Julian’s vocal cords, sending a chill down the spine of the chamber. "The failed prototype returns to the foundry."
