Chapter 21 - The Ghost Signal

The ambient hum of the laboratory suddenly deepened.

Julian’s private high-bandwidth terminal—completely disconnected from Meridian’s public enterprise intranet, hardwired only to an underground dark-fiber trunk—flickered once.

The high-resolution displays abruptly lost their video feed, dropping into pure, pitch-black standby.

Vance stepped toward the desk, his eyes wide. "Julian... what did you just trigger?"

"I didn't trigger anything," Julian said, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper. "My diagnostic probe pinged an inactive root address inside Chimera's code. And something on the other end just answered."

Across the center display, a single green line of code cut through the darkness:

`TRANSMISSION ACCEPTED: NODE 00-ALPHA.`

Then, the monitor refreshed.

It didn't display code. It didn't display corporate threats or extortion demands.

It displayed a high-resolution, black-and-white photograph taken twenty years ago.

The photograph showed a small, run-down kitchen in suburban Ohio. Sitting at a kitchen table was a seven-year-old Julian, smiling shyly at the camera, wearing an oversized sweater. Standing behind him, with his hand resting proudly on young Julian’s shoulder, was his father, David Mercer—a man who had supposedly died in a catastrophic factory boiler explosion twelve years ago.

Beside David Mercer stood a second man, his face turned half-away from the lens, wearing a vintage titanium wristwatch engraved with a symbol Julian had seen only once before: the stylized double-helix emblem of Project Chimera.

Beneath the photograph, a text prompt began typing itself onto the terminal at sixty words per minute, accompanied by the mechanical clack of an ancient teletype emulator:

`"Julian. You destroyed the Vanguard playground with remarkable efficiency. Your father would have been proud of your algorithmic precision. But Marcus Sterling was merely the pawn tasked with keeping you busy until your twenty-third birthday."`

Julian’s breath caught in his throat. His knuckles turned white against the edge of the mahogany desk.

`"Your mother lied about the boiler explosion. Vanessa never knew the truth. But your father didn't die for a corporate insurance payout, Julian. He went underground to finish the work that Meridian stole from him thirty years ago."`

Arthur Vance stared at the screen, his face suddenly paper-white, his hand trembling as he backed away from the desk toward the vault doors.

`"Arthur Vance knows exactly what happened in that basement in 2012. Ask him why your father’s name was erased from the original Meridian Dynamics incorporation charter."`

The terminal screen blinked once, and a digital countdown timer ignited in the dead center of the display, counting down in red milliseconds from:

`00:59:59`

`00:59:58`

`00:59:57`

Julian slowly turned his head away from the monitor.

In the dim amber glow of the emergency lights, Julian looked Arthur Vance dead in the eye.

Vance stood frozen near the threshold of the reinforced exit doors, his breathing shallow, his hand inching quietly toward the concealed security override button beneath the door frame.

"Arthur," Julian said, his voice terrifyingly calm, vibrating with an intensity that made the billionaire CEO freeze in his tracks. "Before that clock hits zero... you're going to tell me what you did to my father."
