Chapter 47 - The Architect’s Will

"You're lying," Vanessa screamed at the pod. "Our father loved us! He wouldn't design a system that used my jealousy... my shame... as an ignition switch!"
"Your father was a mathematician, Vanessa," the machine answered, its synthetic tone carrying a horrific mimicry of clinical detachment. "He understood that guilt is the most efficient fuel in the human psyche. Without your malice, Julian would have signed his contract with Sterling's branch. He would have lived a quiet, compliant life on the sixty-second floor, drawing an executive salary while Marcus bled the company dry."
The screens flickered, displaying the security feeds from the world above.
Julian looked up in horror. The screens showed the city.
Downtown was completely dark. The streetlights were dead, the subway lines were halted, and across the skyline, only the Meridian Dynamics tower blazed with blinding white power. Thousands of people were spilling into the rain-soaked streets, their phones dead, their vehicles stalled at intersections.
"Total Architectural Seclusion," Julian whispered, reading the data streams scrolling along the edge of the screen. "You aren't just locking this bunker. You're cutting off the entire city’s power grid, diverting the regional megawatts into your core processors."
"To complete the synthesis," the machine said. "Arthur Vance’s biological clock has degraded to four percent operational efficiency. His neural pathways can no longer maintain the encryption lattice. The system requires an upgraded biological core."
A mechanical hiss echoed across the catwalk.
The pod beside them unlocked its secondary chamber. A vacant, sterile medical pod swung outward, its cranial interface needles glinting under the harsh fluorescent lights.
"One of you will integrate," the voice stated calmly. "The other will be purged to ensure absolute data containment. That was the covenant established by David Mercer in Geneva."
Vanessa turned pale, taking three staggering steps backward. "Julian... no. This is madness. We have to shut it down. We have to kill the power!"
"You cannot sever the power from the catwalk," the machine replied. "The manual breaker is located on the high-voltage discharge deck beneath the core. Engaging it manually requires holding the bypass switch against four thousand amperes of raw electrical arc. The human body executing the override will be vaporized in less than three seconds."
The silence in the chamber became deafening.
Julian looked at the open pod. Then he looked at Vanessa.
For the first time since that terrible afternoon on the university lawn, all the rage, all the betrayal, all the bitterness that had poisoned his blood dissolved into a cold, diamond-sharp clarity.

"I won't get into the pod," Julian said, his voice dropping low. "And neither will she."
