Chapter 99 - The Forgotten Sanctuary

The pursuit launch skipped over the choppy waves of the lagoon at forty knots, the lights of Venice blurring into streaks of gold and red behind them in the heavy fog. Daniel kept the navigation lights off, relying entirely on the military-grade infrared display built into the dashboard.
Behind them, three sets of high-intensity halogen spotlights cut through the mist—fast interceptor craft dispatched from the military arsenal, closing the distance rapidly.
"Where are we going?" Emma yelled over the roar of the engines, holding Lily tight against her chest inside the sheltered cabin.
"Murano," Clara said, leaning over the helm map and pointing to an abandoned glass foundry on the northeastern perimeter of the island. "My private cell established a safe node there two years ago. It’s built over a submerged fourteenth-century cistern. Radar can’t penetrate the brickwork, and the canals are too narrow for those interceptors."
Daniel checked the radar screen. "They're gaining. One mile out and closing at forty-five knots. We won't make the docks before they open fire."
Emma set Lily down on the leather bench and unzipped Daniel's tactical bag. She pulled out the Golden Ledger, its heavy metal plates cold to the touch. "Lily, you said you read something on that parchment. How do we shut this down? How do we stop them from hunting us?"
Lily reached out and touched the gold filigree along the spine of the book. As her fingers traced the pattern, a hidden compartment on the bottom edge popped open with a soft click, revealing a slender silver cylinder no larger than a fountain pen.
"The book isn't money, Mom," Lily said quietly. "It's a broadcast transmitter. Grandpa didn't want the family to keep the secrets. He wanted everybody to see them."
Clara’s eyes widened in horror and realization. "The global override... it isn't an inheritance transfer. It's a dead man's switch. If the Laurent ledger is authenticated by the Seventh Sovereign, it releases forty years of classified banking records to every major central bank and justice department in the world."
Emma looked down at the silver cylinder in Lily's hand. "It destroys the entire family empire."

"Not just the family," Clara whispered. "The syndicate. The politicians they bought. The governments they financed. It’s an economic nuclear warhead."
"Good," Emma said, her voice turning to pure steel. "They tried to destroy my daughter over money. Let them burn in the ashes."
