Chapter 61 - The Bastion in the Mist

"Daniel, NO!" Emma screamed, but Daniel ripped his arm free and slammed the heavy pressure-hatch shut from the outside.

Through the thick quartz porthole of the capsule, Emma watched him grab the manual release lever on the gantry. The yacht lurched violently, tilting vertically toward the sky as its stern was swallowed by the black waters of the Channel. With a final, agonizing heave, Daniel pulled the release.

The locking pins sheared away with an explosive crack. The survival capsule shot down the rail, launched violently into the stormy black sea just as *The Leviathan* snapped in half with a deafening metallic screech, plunging beneath the churning waves.

The capsule tumbled through the dark water, rotating wildly before its self-righting ballasts engaged, popping the pod back up to the surface of the tempest.

Inside, Emma held Lily tightly against her chest, bracing against the padded walls as the capsule crested twenty-foot swells in the pitch-black night. Outside the porthole, nothing remained of *The Leviathan*. Only floating debris, churning white foam, and the relentless, driving rain of the English Channel.

"Mom... where is Daniel?" Lily whispered, trembling violently in Emma’s arms.

Emma couldn't speak. A suffocating lump formed in her throat as she stared out into the empty, storm-tossed sea. She stroked Lily's head, pressing her forehead against her daughter's, tears finally spilling down her cheeks.

Suddenly, inside the darkened capsule, an automated communications console blinked to life.

A high-frequency military satellite channel engaged with a low, mechanical hum. On the glowing green display, an encrypted coordinate lock began to triangulate—not from London, not from Geneva, but from an uncharted deep-sea oil platform hundreds of miles to the north, in the brutal expanse of the North Sea.

The speakers crackled with static.

Emma froze.

A voice began to transmit across the emergency frequency. It wasn't Vance. It wasn't Evelyn.

It was a deep, familiar, weathered voice that Emma had not heard in seven years—the voice of Francis Laurent, her father, whom she had buried in a sealed casket.

*"Emma... if you are hearing this transmission, the fail-safe has been activated. The man who called himself Vance was only an executioner. The real Council is here, at the Bastion. And your daughter was never supposed to survive her eighth year..."*

The recording stopped.

A mechanical alarm on the console began a new, five-minute countdown, locking the capsule's automated steering systems onto the coordinates in the North Sea mist.
