Chapter 13 - The Shattered Facade

Emma walked down the grand marble staircase of the Vance estate, her footsteps echoing through the cavernous foyer. At the bottom of the stairs, Judge Sterling stood by the entrance, reviewing police dispatch logs, while two private security officers guarded the sitting room doors.
Inside the sitting room sat Margaret. Stripped of her jewelry, her designer blazer crumpled, the matriarch looked like a hollow phantom of the tyrant who had sneered at Lily only twenty-four hours earlier.
Emma pushed the double doors open. Margaret looked up, her bloodshot eyes flaring with venom.
“Have you come to gloat, you ungrateful little wretch?” Margaret spat, clutching her hands in her lap. “You think because Daniel and some corrupt judge brought pieces of paper into my house, you’ve won? I gave you a roof! I clothed you! I gave you a family!”
Emma stepped forward, pulling the yellowed birth certificate from her blazer and tossing it onto the low glass table between them.
Margaret’s face lost every shred of color. Her sneer withered into absolute, suffocating terror.
“Did you really think Arthur would take your secrets to his grave, Margaret?” Emma’s voice was as cold as dry ice. “Or did you honestly believe you could erase Julian and Catherine from this earth forever?”
Margaret recoiled as if the parchment were laced with poison. “You... you were never supposed to find that. Arthur swore to me... he swore he destroyed the Swiss registries!”
“He protected me from you,” Emma said, closing the distance until she stood directly over the woman who had spent thirty years tearing down her spirit. “You humiliated Lily. You told an eight-year-old child she didn't belong to this family, that she had no right to call me her mother. But the truth is, Margaret... *you* never belonged to this family. You were nothing more than Arthur’s companion on paper. You own nothing. Your children own nothing.”
Margaret grabbed Emma’s wrist in a frantic, clawing grip. “Listen to me, Emma! You don’t understand what Arthur did! Julian’s death wasn't an accident! If you touch that vault in Geneva, they will come for you! The people Arthur ran from—they’ll know Julian’s blood is alive!”

Emma yanked her wrist free, her gaze unflinching. “Let them come. Because unlike my father, I am done running.”
