Chapter 81 - The Final Indictment

The moment the machine spoke, the transfer bar on the screens shattered into red error codes.

Across the vault, heavy magnetic latches slammed into place with the force of falling guillotines. The massive cages encasing the billions in gold bullion locked into impenetrable subterranean stasis. Evelyn’s accounts flashed red: *REVOKED. FROZEN. SURRENDERED TO INTERNATIONAL ESCROW.*

Evelyn dropped her revolver. It hit the polished concrete floor with a hollow clatter, skittering away into the shadows. She sank to her knees, staring at her empty hands, her empire, her arrogance, and her entire life’s ambition reduced to ash in a matter of seconds.

"It's over," Emma said, stepping up to her mother, looking down at the broken woman who had spent years trying to break her soul. "By morning, the Norwegian authorities and Interpol will be here to take you into custody. You will spend the rest of your days in a concrete cell, watching the world Lily builds without you."

Evelyn slowly raised her head. But to Emma's sudden horror, the broken woman wasn't weeping.

A cracked, jagged, terrifying laugh began to bubble up from Evelyn’s throat.

"You fool..." Evelyn whispered, blood flecking her pale lips as she smiled up at Emma. "You stupid, arrogant little fool..."

Emma felt a cold spike of instinct strike the back of her neck. "What did you do?"

"You think... I was the one who designed Project Cinderella?" Evelyn wheezed, her smile widening into a grotesque grin. "You think I wanted to keep this money for myself?"

A heavy hydraulic thud reverberated through the ceiling of the vault.

High above them, on the circular observation gallery forty feet in the air, the darkness suddenly gave way to a single, harsh halogen spotlight. The heavy blast doors at the vault entrance slammed shut behind Viktor and Daniel, the magnetic locks engaging with absolute finality.

A countdown timer ignited on the main screen: *03:00... 02:59... 02:58...*

From the shadows of the high observation gallery, the slow, rhythmic sound of leather-soled shoes echoed against the metal catwalk. A tall, immaculate figure in a tailored bespoke suit leaned over the iron railing, clapping his hands in slow, mocking applause.

Emma’s breath froze in her chest. Daniel took a step back, his eyes widening in pure disbelief.

The man stepping into the spotlight had the unmistakable Laurent jawline, the piercing blue eyes, and the silver signet ring that had supposedly been buried six feet under the earth ten years ago.

"Well done, Emma," the voice echoed from above, smooth, cultured, and terrifyingly alive. "You brought Lily right where she belongs. Now, let us begin the true succession."
