Chapter 94 - The Ledger's Verdict

Daniel lowered his head slightly, his tactical instincts on high alert. "She’s right. Listen."

Beneath the hiss of the green braziers, a faint, rhythmic mechanical click echoed from deep inside the marble altar. It sounded like an intricate clockwork mechanism, ancient brass gears slowly spinning beneath thousands of pounds of stone.

"Bring her forward," the Grand Magistrate commanded from his throne, the nine other masked figures leaning forward in unison. "Let the Seventh Sovereign claim the mantle, or let the Laurent line be extinguished forever."

Emma knelt beside her daughter. She looked into Lily's eyes, seeing the child who had cried over a forgotten birthday gift just weeks ago, now standing before the masters of a shadow empire without trembling. "We do this together," Emma whispered. "Whatever happens, Daniel and I do not leave your side."

"I know, Mom," Lily said softly. "I'm not scared anymore."

Hand in hand, Emma and Lily ascended the three marble steps toward the altar. Clara stood aside, her arms crossed beneath her sleeves, watching with an intense, unreadable hunger.

As they reached the edge of the altar, the bronze dial on the book began to spin on its own, small mechanical clicks escalating into a sharp whir. In the center of the copper basin, a minute silver lancet rose from a concealed groove, gleaming under the torchlight.

"Place her palm flat over the center," Clara instructed, her breath catching. "The plate requires only a fraction of blood to read the capillary density and ancestral markers."

Daniel was already checking the perimeter, his back to the altar, watching the cloaked sentries by the iron doors. "Emma, make it fast. We have movement on the upper galleries."

Emma guided Lily’s hand toward the dial. Just before Lily’s small fingers brushed the metal, Emma placed her own hand over her daughter's, shielding her skin. "If it requires the bloodline, mine will suffice."

Emma pressed her palm down firmly onto the lancet.

A sharp sting bit into her skin. For a second, nothing happened. Then, the green braziers flared violently, the flames leaping three feet into the air. The heavy gold-bound covers of the ledger did not simply open—they unlocked with a deafening metallic boom that reverberated down through the floorboards.

The pages began to turn rapidly, as if caught in a violent invisible wind, illuminating the dark stone ceiling with thousands of faint, fiber-optic threads woven directly into the ancient vellum.
