Chapter 70 - The Genesis Archive

"Why did you do this to us?" Emma demanded, her eyes burning with tears she refused to let fall. "Why did you build this nightmare around a child?!"
Francis Laurent gripped her wrist, his bony fingers bruising her skin. "Because Lily... is the only one who can destroy them. Inside her DNA... is the private encryption key to every illegal transaction, every bribery ledger, every assassination order the Directorate carried out for fifty years."
He pointed a trembling, spotted finger toward the central console.
"I encoded the archive into her biological markers before she was born. That's why Evelyn hated her. That's why Evelyn refused to acknowledge her at the birthday party. Evelyn knew... if Lily turned eight... the legal window for Evelyn to claim guardianship expired. The system automatically unlocks the archive to the global financial regulators... but it requires her living biometric scan."
A deafening explosion rocked the platform. Metal groaned. The heavy blast doors at the far end of the facility warped inward under immense heat. A cutting torch was eating through the four-inch titanium barriers from the outside.
"Lily!" Emma shouted.
The girl emerged from the maintenance duct, her face smudged with soot, clutching the tiny silver coin her grandfather had given her years ago.
"Come here, sweetie," Emma said gently, kneeling beside her. "Put your hand on that glass screen. Do it now."
Lily looked at the dying old man in the bed, then at Emma. Without hesitation, she walked to the central terminal and pressed her small palm flat against the glowing scanner.
A brilliant green beam traversed her skin.

Behind the glass, Francis Laurent let out a long, shuddering breath, a faint smile touching his withered lips as his monitor flatlined into a continuous, piercing tone.
