Chapter 41 - The Sealed Abyss

The subterranean vault shuddered as five-ton blast doors of solid manganese steel began to descend from the ceiling, cutting off the exit to the Royal Mile.
“He’s triggering the quarantine seal!” Eleanor yelled over the deafening roar of the machinery and the clatter of gunfire. “If those doors slam shut, the ventilation valves will vent liquid nitrogen into the chamber! Arthur designed it to entomb the entire vault in case of capture!”
“Daniel! The main gate!” Emma screamed, picking up Lily with one arm and pulling Eleanor with the other.
Daniel and the four surviving Vanguard soldiers formed a defensive perimeter, firing continuously at Thorne’s remaining men who were falling back toward the secondary escape hatch. “It’s too late for the Cowgate! We have thirty seconds before the primary slab drops!”
They sprinted toward the narrowing gap beneath the descending manganese door. Sparks showered from the hydraulic tracks as the sheer weight of the slab crushed stone pillars beneath it.
Across the chamber, Thorne sneered, stepping through a private titanium escape hatch. “Farewell, House of Laurent! You die with the secrets you stole!”
Thorne turned to pull his private hatch shut—but suddenly froze.
A figure emerged from the shadows behind Thorne inside the escape tunnel.
It was not a mercenary.
It was a woman dressed in an exquisite black silk evening gown, her eyes calculating and cold, holding a suppressed pistol directly against Thorne’s spine.
Emma stopped dead in her tracks, twenty feet from the descending blast door, her breath catching in her throat as the crimson emergency strobe illuminated the woman’s face.
It was Evelyn.
Her adoptive mother.
The woman who had humiliated Lily at the kitchen table, the woman who had pretended to be an impoverished, debt-ridden widow in New York, stood tall, elegant, and completely composed in the heart of the European syndicate’s most secret vault.
“Evelyn...?” Emma gasped, the world spinning in total, horrifying disbelief.
Evelyn didn't look at Thorne. She looked directly across the chaotic, crumbling chamber, straight into Emma’s eyes, a cruel, triumphant smile curving her lips.
“Did you really think, Emma, that Arthur would trust an innocent stranger to raise his most dangerous secret?” Evelyn said, her voice amplified through the tunnel’s intercom system, cold and dripping with venom. “Christian was a pawn. Thorne was the banker. But I... I was the architect who watched you every single day of your life.”
Evelyn pulled the trigger, dropping Lord Alistair Thorne like a slaughtered ox.
Then, before Emma could scream, Evelyn reached for the manual bypass console inside the private airlock.
“Thank you for activating the Master Key, darling,” Evelyn whispered into the microphone. “Now sleep well with your true family.”

Evelyn slammed the override switch.
With a thunderous, earth-shattering crash, the five-ton steel blast door slammed completely into the bedrock floor, sealing Emma, Lily, Eleanor, and Daniel inside the dark, airtight tomb—just as the hissing sound of pressurized freezing gas began to roar from the ceiling vents.
