Chapter 46 - The London Crucible

By mid-afternoon, the group had slipped into London through a decommissioned cargo dock in Bermondsey. Daniel’s underground contacts provided a sterile apartment above a dry cleaner's shop on a narrow Victorian mews, along with four sets of tailored formal attire and forged diplomatic credentials.
Lily sat quietly on the sofa, clutching the silver locket her grandfather had given her. "Mom? Are you going to be scared?"
Emma knelt before her, fastening the child’s small wool coat. "I am scared, Lily. But being brave doesn't mean you don't feel fear. It means you do what must be done even when your hands are shaking."
"I have the numbers memorized," Lily said firmly, tapping her temple. "The three sequences Grandfather made me recite before bedtime every night. I won't forget them."
Emma smiled, kissing Lily’s forehead with tender reverence. "You won't have to use them unless I tell you. Daniel’s most trusted operative, Miller, is going to stay with you here in this safehouse. Nobody knows about this place. You stay inside, keep the door bolted, and wait for me."
"Promise you'll come back," Lily whispered, her tough exterior momentarily slipping to reveal the terrified eight-year-old underneath.
"I swear on my life," Emma said. "No one takes me away from you ever again."
Eleanor entered the room, now dressed in an imposing, emerald-velvet evening gown with pearl chokers that concealed the tactical comm-bead at her throat. "The Syndicate members have begun arriving at St. Jude’s. The private security cordon extends two blocks in every direction. If we are going to breach the ballroom before Evelyn initiates the terminal vote, we must leave now."

Emma stood, slipping a compact ceramic pistol into the concealed holster of her black tailored evening suit. The timid girl who had bowed her head at family dinners was gone. In her place stood the true Sovereign Heir of the Laurent dynasty, ready to claim her war.
