Chapter 5 - The First Alarm

At 5:45 AM, the sun had barely crested the manicured hedges of Margaret Vance’s sprawling estate in the wealthiest enclave of the county. The grand brick mansion stood silent, its stone fountain trickling softly in the morning mist.
Inside the master suite, Margaret was already awake, sipping Earl Grey tea in a silk dressing gown. On her polished mahogany vanity lay the guest list from the previous evening's party, along with a draft letter prepared by her attorney, Harold Thorne. The letter was an initial petition to question Emma’s guardianship over Lily, citing the absence of a registered father and supposed irregularities in the hospital registry.
Margaret smiled faintly to herself. Emma had always been weak, soft-hearted, and eager to please. The public humiliation last night had been the warning shot. Emma would fold, hand over the trust oversight, and Margaret would retain absolute control over the millions Arthur had tried to lock away.
Suddenly, her smartphone on the nightstand buzzed with an abrupt, harsh vibration.
Margaret frowned, picking it up. It was a text alert from Private Banking Services at First Manhattan Trust:
*ALERT: Master Account Ending in 4091 has been placed on an administrative freeze pursuant to Court Order #DEL-7819. All recurring disbursements, line-of-credit draws, and card authorizations are suspended effective immediately.*
Margaret spilled a drop of hot tea onto her silk lap. "What on earth?" she muttered.
Before she could process the message, her phone rang. The screen displayed her son Richard’s name.
"Mother!" Richard’s voice was breathless, bordering on hysterical. "Mother, what the hell is going on? I’m at the private airport trying to fuel the jet for the client trip to Chicago, and my Vance Holdings corporate card just got declined for fraud!"

"Calm down, Richard," Margaret snapped, standing up quickly. "It must be an administrative glitch. A clerical error."
"It’s not a glitch!" Richard yelled through the phone. "Sophia just called me two minutes ago in tears! Her country club membership payment bounced, and her bank account is showing a zero balance! Mother, all of our accounts are locked!"
