Chapter 40 - The Sovereign Override

A sharp, electric crackle snapped through the plinth.

Instantly, the white ambient lights of the ancient vault died, plunging the catacombs into complete, pitch-black darkness.

“Guards!” Thorne roared in panic. “Secure the child!”

Before the echoes of his voice could fade, red emergency lights bathed the room in a blood-colored glow. The massive digital plinth didn't display the authorization treaty. Instead, a wall of cascading green code surged across the terminal screens, followed by a terrifying automated voice that echoed from concealed speakers throughout the catacombs:

*“PROTOCOL NEMESIS ACTIVATED. UNAUTHORIZED HOSTILE CONVERGENCE DETECTED. BIOMETRIC KEY INVERSION CONFIRMED BY HEIR APPARENT: EMMA LAURENT.”*

“What did you do?!” one of the council members screamed, scrambling out of his chair.

“Arthur knew you would eventually corner us, Thorne,” Eleanor’s voice rang out from the shadows, filled with triumphant mockery. “The dual inverted stars don't unlock the trust. They trigger the Sovereign Liquidator!”

Across the global banking servers from London to Frankfurt, Tokyo to New York, Arthur Laurent’s hidden worm virus—dormant for thirty years—ignited. In seconds, every offshore holding, every secret shell company, every bearer bond owned by the five members of the Sovereign Circle was systematically dumped into public market registries, freezing their assets, stripping their sovereign immunities, and broadcasting every illegal transaction they had executed since 1974 directly to Interpol and the International Court of Justice.

Gunfire erupted.

Daniel moved with lethal, blinding speed. The two Vanguard operatives hidden in the rear corridors fired synchronized suppressed rounds, dropping the guards flanking Eleanor before they could pull a trigger. Daniel vaulted across the stone table, his combat knife flashing, disarming Thorne’s personal bodyguard and driving him to the stone floor.

Emma grabbed Lily, sweeping her behind the massive oak table as Thorne’s mercenaries opened fire from the upper balconies. Stone splinters exploded from the walls as high-caliber rounds shredded the ancient room.

“Vanguard, lay down suppression!” Daniel shouted into his comm, firing his sidearm with surgical precision at the balcony snipers.

Eleanor tore herself free from her restraints, sliding across the wet stone floor toward Emma. Mother and daughter met for the first time in thirty years under a storm of ricocheting bullets.

Eleanor grabbed Emma’s shoulders, tears cutting through the grime on her face. “Emma... my brave, beautiful girl.”

“We’re leaving, Mother,” Emma said, pulling Eleanor down beside Lily. “Together.”

Thorne, his face purple with rage, staggered back toward the rear iron door of the vault, clutching a submachine gun he had snatched from a fallen guard. “You fools! You think you can destroy the Circle? You’ve signed your own death warrants! No one leaves these catacombs alive!”

Thorne slammed his hand against an emergency panel on the wall, laughing like a madman as the grinding sound of hydraulic gears began to shriek.
