Chapter 28 - The Secret Chamber of Domaine Laurent

Christian’s arrogance betrayed him. A victor’s smirk crossed his aristocratic features as he gestured toward the open chapel doors across the courtyard.

“The chest is simply the lockbox, Emma,” Christian purred, stepping backward toward the chapel. “The primary console sits beneath the altar. Catherine’s master terminal. Come. Witness the annihilation of your mother’s life work with your own eyes.”

Flanked by two armed operatives in tactical plate carriers, Emma followed Christian into the cavernous, vaulted interior of the ancient chapel. The smell of aged cedar, damp stone, and centuries of incense hung heavy in the air.

At the center of the nave, the marble floor had been hydraulically retracted, revealing a spiral stone staircase descending deep into the earth.

Emma followed them down into the Roman crypts. The subterranean chamber had been transformed decades ago into a state-of-the-art technological bunker. Rows of silent server stacks lined the ancient limestone vaults, hummed with quiet geothermal power, their LED status lights blinking like constellations in the dark.

In the center of the crypt sat a monolithic pedestal of brushed steel, integrated directly into the bedrock. Resting upon it was Arthur Vance’s metal chest, connected by high-speed fiber-optic cables to the central console.

“Thirty years,” Christian breathed, running his fingers along the edge of the pedestal. “Thirty years my family operated in the shadows, waiting for Arthur Vance to rot so we could recover the names, the accounts, the absolute control over European finance that Catherine stole from us.”

He turned to Emma, his eyes gleaming with mania. “The pendant, Emma. Insert the star into the central socket. If you refuse, a single radio burst from my satellite uplink will instruct my men in New York to detonate a thermite charge in your family’s living room. Margaret, Richard, Victoria—they will burn to ash inside their own walls.”

Emma looked at the console, then back at Christian. Through the earpiece hidden deep inside her ear canal, she heard Daniel’s faint, calm whisper: *“Sniper teams are neutralized. French tactical units are inside the perimeter walls. Lily is secure. Give the signal, Emma.”*

Emma walked forward, her boots echoing against the centuries-old flagstones. She held up the star pendant.

“Arthur always told me that Margaret thought power was about who you could humiliate,” Emma said softly, her fingers resting against the pendant’s housing. “He said true power was knowing when your enemy was blinded by their own greed.”

Emma slammed the star pendant into the central socket on the steel pedestal.
