Chapter 14 - The Heir's True Burden

The morning sun broke over the manicured lawns of the estate, casting long, sharp shadows across the driveway. Outside, three transport vans arrived to escort Margaret’s personal belongings off the premises under the watchful eye of county deputies.
Upstairs in the study, Uncle Daniel poured three cups of black coffee. Judge Sterling spread out an assortment of leather-bound dossiers across Arthur’s desk.
“We knew Julian had left behind an overseas trust,” Daniel said quietly, staring into his cup with a weary look in his eyes. “Arthur kept the specifics locked away even from me. He said the fewer people who knew the biological line, the safer you and Lily would be. Margaret’s family had heavy political connections back then; they wanted Julian’s international assets liquidated.”
“And Arthur spent thirty years building an impenetrable legal wall around me,” Emma realized, running her finger over Arthur’s neat penmanship on the file folders.
“He did,” Judge Sterling nodded. “Vance Holdings was designed as a financial fortress to safeguard the Laurent Trust. But under Swiss banking regulations, Emma, an inheritance tied to a dormant directorship requires in-person biometric authentication before your thirty-first birthday. If you do not claim the vault within forty-eight hours, the board of trustees in Geneva is legally obligated to dissolve the trust into public escrow.”
“Forty-eight hours,” Emma murmured.
“And your half-siblings aren't sitting idle,” Daniel warned, his brow furrowing deeply. “Richard and Victoria just posted bail an hour ago using an emergency corporate credit line that hadn't been revoked yet. They’ve retained Carter & Vance LLP—the old firm. They are calling an emergency shareholder summit for Vance Holdings in downtown Manhattan this afternoon. If they pass an interim receivership vote before you claim the parent trust in Europe, they can tie your legal status up in international probate for a decade.”
Emma looked toward the doorway. Down the hall, Lily was sitting on a plush sofa, laughing quietly as one of the household maids served her fresh pancakes with strawberries. The shadow of yesterday’s cruelty had begun to fade from her little face, replaced by the warmth she deserved.
Emma looked back at Daniel and Judge Sterling, her jaw set like tempered iron.

“Book the private jet for Geneva tonight,” Emma ordered. “But first, call the board of Vance Holdings. Tell Richard and Victoria that the Chairman of the Board will be attending their meeting in person.”
