Chapter 73 - The Fall of the Leviathan

The mercenaries collapsed into the rising puddles of brine, their weapons clattering across the deck. Through the smoking breach where the observation doors had once stood stepped three operators clad in charcoal-grey maritime assault gear, their helmets unmarked, their movements fluid and lethal.
The point-man lowered his carbine, his visor sliding up just enough to reveal sharp, weathered eyes that Emma recognized from a lifetime ago. It was Viktor Vane—the retired field director of the Laurent family's private vanguard, a man who had vanished ten years before Emma’s father died.
"Stand down, Evelyn," Viktor’s gravelly voice cut through the tempest. "Your mandate expired thirty seconds ago when the Genesis keys validated."
"Traitor!" Evelyn hissed, stepping back toward an emergency pressurized blast door behind her. "You served my father! You swore an oath to the Directorate!"
"I swore an oath to the bloodline," Viktor replied coldly, raising his sidearm. "Not to the parasites feeding on its corpse."
The aristocratic man lunged forward, drawing a concealed ceramic pistol, but Viktor didn't hesitate. A single shot dropped the aristocrat to his knees, clutching his shoulder as his weapon spun across the slick steel floor. Evelyn didn't spare her ally a second glance; with terrifying speed for a woman of her age, she slapped the emergency override panel. The heavy hydraulic blast door slammed shut between them with a concussive hiss of pressurized seals, locking her into the escape pods below the rig's main tower.
"Mama!" Lily gasped, tugging Emma’s sleeve with desperate strength. "Daddy! The water is taking him!"
Emma whipped her head back toward the open ocean. Evelyn’s ballistic submarine was groaning in agony, its breached compartments flooding at catastrophic speed. The bow was pointing straight up into the storm clouds, and Daniel was mere seconds from being dragged into the freezing abyss of the trench.
"Viktor!" Emma screamed, running toward the open precipice where the observation glass had been torn away. "We need a line! Now!"
"Already deployed, Director Emma," Viktor said into his throat mic. "Hook in!"
From the superstructure overhead, two heavy-duty magnetic winch cables dropped down. Emma didn't wait for Viktor's men to assist; she grabbed a harness, snapped the carabiner onto the guide rail, and looked back at her daughter.

"Stay behind Viktor, Lily. Do not move from this spot," Emma ordered, her voice vibrating with absolute maternal resolve.
"Bring him back, Mom," Lily said, her eyes wide, fierce, and entirely devoid of tears. "Bring him home."
