Chapter 42 - Frost and Steel

The hiss of pressurized nitrogen echoed off the damp bedrock, thick white vapor billowing from the overhead vents like an encroaching avalanche. Within seconds, the temperature in the sealed vault plunged below zero, coating the metal bulkheads and the discarded master terminal in brittle rime.
"Get Lily into the center, away from the floor vents!" Daniel barked, his voice ragged as he stripped off his tactical parka and wrapped it around the trembling eight-year-old. Lily’s breath came in ragged plumes of white mist, her lips already tinged with an ominous blue.
Emma pulled her daughter against her chest, shivering violently as the arctic chill bit through her damp clothes. "Daniel, the door... there has to be an emergency manual crank!"
Eleanor, leaning heavily against the central console, shook her head with a grim grimace. "Thorne designed this redoubt as a zero-survivor failsafe. The pneumatic pins in that blast door are ten inches of solid manganese. We cannot force it from the inside."
"Then we find another way," Emma snapped, fear sharpening her resolve into sheer fury. She looked down at Lily. "Remember what your grandfather told you in the study before we left Zurich? Think, sweetheart. Did he give you a riddle about the cold?"
Lily squeezed her eyes shut, burying her face into Emma’s neck before suddenly stiffening. "The river... Grandfather said if the castle ever freezes, you don't look at the gates. You look for the water wheel. He said the deep pipes never stop moving because of the sea."
Daniel’s eyes snapped toward the subterranean drainage grate beneath the primary coolant manifold. "The geothermal siphon. Arthur didn't draw cooling air from the street; he diverted the subterranean runoff from the Nor' Loch basin!"
Daniel hurled himself onto the stone floor, using the butt of his sidearm to batter the frozen seal of the drainage grille. With a roar of exertion, he wrenched the rusted iron grating upward, revealing a roaring, subterranean flume of black, rushing water plunging through a narrow basalt fissure beneath the floorboards.
"It leads to the municipal storm runoff toward the Firth of Forth," Eleanor shouted over the screeching alarms. "It's a blind drop into freezing current, Emma! If we misjudge the depth, the rocks will crush us!"
Emma looked back at the blast door where Evelyn’s silhouette had vanished only moments before. The ceiling vents groaned as liquid frost began dripping like lethal needles onto the floor. "Dying here is a certainty. Jumping is a chance. We go together."

Clutching Lily securely against her chest with Daniel’s heavy harness straps, Emma stepped to the edge of the abyss and plunged into the roaring dark.
