Chapter 78 - Shadows in the Fjords

The darkness of the high Arctic was absolute. Above the jagged peaks of Spitsbergen, the aurora borealis twisted like a ghostly green serpent across the black vault of the heavens.

*The Revenant* breached the frigid surface two miles out from the jagged cliffs of the fjord, running on silent electric auxiliary power. Ice floes ground softly against the reinforced steel hull as Emma, Daniel, and Viktor stood on the upper deck, scanning the desolate white coastline with thermal imaging binoculars.

"There," Daniel pointed to a sheer rock face descending directly into the black water.

A disguised hydraulic sea gate was partially ajar, steam venting into the minus-thirty-degree air. Tracks from heavy snowmobiles and tracked troop transports led up from the shoreline toward a brutalist concrete bunker carved deep into the permafrost—the Arctic Redoubt.

"Thermal scans show at least forty armed personnel inside," Viktor warned, loading a heavy winter-camo suppressed carbine. "These aren't ordinary mercenaries. These are the remnants of the Iron Guard—the private security wing of the Directorate that went off-grid after the Cold War. Fanatics, well-funded, and defending the last gold reserve on the continent."

"We don't need to wipe out forty men," Emma said, tightening the straps of her tactical vest over her thermal winter parka. She checked the sovereign encryption key hanging around her neck—the physical titanium drive Lily had handed her. "We only need to reach the Vault Core. If Lily’s biometric signature locks the central ledger, the vault's blast doors seal permanently from the inside. Their funds become worthless scrap metal trapped under two miles of granite."

"I'm going with you to the secondary gate," Daniel said firmly, racking the slide of an automatic rifle. "I owe Evelyn’s commanders a personal receipt."

"You're still recovering, Daniel," Emma protested softly, touching his bandaged arm.

"I can pull a trigger, Emma. And nobody threatens my family twice."

Emma looked into his eyes and saw the same fire that had brought them together years ago. She nodded. "Viktor, deploy the assault team. Lily stays in the submarine's armored command pod under guard."

"No," Lily’s small voice spoke from the hatch behind them. She stood bundled in a white fur parka, her chin raised. "The computer at the vault needs a living retinal scan, doesn't it? The screen said 'Primary Descendant Present.' You can't lock it without me, Mom."
