Chapter 34 - The Subterranean Run

The damp, chilled air of the tunnel bit into Emma’s skin as she hurried down the slippery stone steps, holding Lily securely against her chest. Daniel moved two paces ahead, a low-powered tactical flashlight cutting through the gloom, his rifle raised and scanning every dark alcove.

Above them, muffled detonations vibrated through the limestone bedrock. The mercenaries were using breaching charges, trying to blast through Catherine’s heavy vault doors. Emma’s heart ached for Catherine, but she forced the grief down, channeling it into an icy, protective fury. She had spent eight years running from poverty, from her mother’s cruel disdain, from the whispers of her greedy siblings. She would not let these faceless monsters take her daughter.

“How far to the river?” Emma whispered, her breath misting in the cold subterranean draft.

“Six hundred meters,” Daniel answered, his voice steady despite the rapid pace. “The tunnel leads to an old Roman cistern that empties directly into an inlet of the Rhône. Arthur kept a modified interceptor boat docked there. Radar-absorbent hull, twin inboard diesel turbines. Once we hit the open water, we can outrun anything short of a fighter jet.”

“Mommy,” Lily whispered, her arms wrapped around Emma’s neck, her head buried in her collarbone. “My pocket is warm.”

Emma paused for half a second. “What, honey?”

Lily reached into her velvet coat and pulled out the locket Catherine had slipped into her pocket. The small silver pendant wasn't just metal; it was glowing faintly with a pulsing blue luminescence. Emma looked closely and realized it was vibrating in resonance with the star pendant hanging around her own neck.

“It’s an active proximity transponder,” Daniel realized, shining his light on it. “Catherine didn't just give her a keepsake. That’s the locator beacon Arthur keyed to Eleanor’s craft. When the two pendants are within ten miles of each other, or linked through the global relay, they synchronize.”

The pendant projected a faint, micro-fiber holographic coordinate onto Lily’s sleeve: *57°32'N, 6°15'W.*

“The Isle of Skye,” Daniel said, his eyes widening. “The Scottish Highlands. That croft wasn't just a hideout. It’s the location of the Sovereign Redoubt. The vault isn't in Geneva or Zurich. Arthur moved the Sovereign Trust to the edge of the North Atlantic.”

Before Emma could respond, a dull metallic clatter echoed from the tunnel behind them.

Daniel spun around, his light cutting through the dark corridor. High up near the sealed entrance, smoke was pouring through the ventilation grates. A heavy cutting torch had breached the secondary hatch.

“They’re in the shaft,” Daniel hissed. “Run!”

They sprinted down the slick stone corridor as the sound of footsteps splashed through the standing water behind them. A muzzle flash illuminated the damp tunnel, and a round ricocheted violently off the stone wall inches above Emma’s head, showering them with rock shards.

Emma pushed forward with every ounce of strength in her legs, shielding Lily with her own body. Ahead, the tunnel opened into a cavernous chamber where the dark, churning waters of the subterranean canal lapped against an ancient stone dock. Anchored in the black water was a sleek, matte-black military vessel.

“Get in!” Daniel roared, turning around and dropping to one knee at the tunnel entrance. He leveled his rifle and fired three controlled bursts into the dark passage, forcing the pursuing mercenaries to scramble for cover.

Emma leapt onto the boat’s deck, sliding Lily down into the reinforced cockpit cabin. She slammed her hand against the starter switch on the helm console, just as Arthur’s security manuals had described. The twin turbines roared to life with a deep, thunderous vibration that rattled the cavern walls.

Daniel sprinted onto the stern, throwing the mooring lines free as bullets pinged against the boat's carbon-composite hull. He hit the throttle, and the interceptor surged forward, cutting through the underground sluice gate and bursting out into the moonlit expanse of the rushing Rhône River.
