Chapter 18 - The Dark Architect

The bronze door swung outward, revealing a private, wood-paneled sanctum untouched by time for thirty years.
In the center of the chamber sat a single black pedestal holding an illuminated display case. Inside lay a leather-bound folio stamped with the wax seal of the Swiss Confederation, flanked by two high-density cryptographic data drives from the late nineties.
Emma walked into the vault, her footsteps soft on the stone floor. Lily stayed close behind Daniel, looking with wide, curious eyes at the gleaming displays.
Emma opened the folio. The first document was a signed confession dated October 1994, bearing the signature of Julian Vance. But attached to the confession was a secondary dossier that caused Emma’s breath to catch.
It was an intelligence breakdown detailing the true hierarchy of the St. Clair Syndicate.
At the very top of the syndicate's board sat three names. The first was Lucien St. Clair, the corrupt Swiss official who had tried to divert their plane.
The second name was an international arms broker.
And the third name, listed as the domestic financial liaison in the United States, was *Harold Sterling*—the father of Judge Sterling.
Emma felt the room tilt around her. She spun around instinctively, staring out the vault door toward the corridor.
Judge Sterling had remained in New York to “handle the marshals.” But he had known every detail of Arthur’s will. He had provided Daniel with the combinations. He had guided Emma directly toward this vault from the very beginning.
“Daniel,” Emma said, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper. “Where is Sterling right now?”
Daniel looked at her, confused by the sudden terror in her eyes. “He was supposed to be monitoring Margaret’s transfer to federal holding in Manhattan. Why?”
Emma thrust the document into Daniel’s hands. As Daniel read the names, his weathered face turned completely white.

“My God,” Daniel breathed. “Arthur didn't trust Sterling. That's why Arthur left the final code in the brass box instead of giving it to the judge. Sterling didn't help us take down Margaret out of loyalty to Arthur... he helped us destroy Margaret so that *I* would bring you and the Laurent key directly here!”
