Chapter 26 - The Shadows of Provence

The Domaine Laurent was not merely a French vineyard; it was a seventeenth-century stone citadel built over Roman foundations, fortified with twelve-foot limestone walls, arched iron gates, and subterranean cellars that spanned miles beneath the hillside.
Daniel’s tactical convoy stopped two kilometers out, concealed within a dense copse of oak and olive trees. Daniel’s team secured the perimeter with thermal scopes and signal jammers while Emma and Daniel conferred over a three-dimensional blueprint of the estate displayed on a hardened laptop.
“The main house is held by St. Clair’s private security detail—roughly twelve men, ex-European special operations,” Daniel analyzed, pointing to heat signatures glowing red on the thermal map. “Christian St. Clair’s private helicopter touched down on the lower terrace twenty minutes ago. He brought Arthur’s metal chest with him.”
“Where is the archive chamber?” Emma asked.
“Beneath the old chapel in the western courtyard,” Daniel pointed. “The chapel sits directly over the Roman crypts. That’s where Catherine installed the central vault before she fled to America. The vault requires physical access: the star pendant to unlock the primary interface, and the swallow cipher to decrypt the core database.”
Daniel looked at Emma grimly. “St. Clair thinks you’re walking into the grand salon to hand him the pendant. He has snipers posted on the clock tower and the southern parapet.”
“Can your French contacts neutralize them?”
“The French GIGN and Directorate-General for Internal Security (DGSI) have surrounded the estate at a five-kilometer cordon,” Daniel revealed. “They’ve granted me command of the breach, but they cannot legally storm the estate while Christian holds diplomatic immunity through an offshore protectorate—unless he initiates an armed conflict on French soil.”
Emma’s eyes narrowed. “Then we give him what he wants—just enough to make him show his hand.”
She turned to Lily. Lily had taken off her headphones and was watching them with calm, luminous eyes.
“Lily,” Emma said, kneeling down so they were eye to eye. “Do you trust Mommy?”
“Yes, Mommy,” Lily answered instantly.
Emma took the tarnished silver swallow from her pocket and gently clasped it around Lily’s neck, tucking it beneath her thermal shirt. “You are going to stay right here with Daniel’s officers. They have bulletproof shields and they will keep you completely safe. I have to go inside that house to finish Grandpa’s work.”
Lily looked at the ancient stone manor in the distance, then reached out and touched Emma’s cheek. “Grandpa said you were the bravest person he ever knew. He said you were Catherine’s daughter, and Catherine never ran away from monsters.”
A knot tightened in Emma’s throat, but she forced back the tears, replacing them with iron resolve. She leaned in, kissed Lily’s forehead, and stood up.

“Daniel,” Emma said, her voice steady and lethal. “Give me a secure comms earpiece and Catherine’s pendant. It’s time to meet Christian St. Clair.”
