Chapter 74 - Blood on the Iron Decks

Emma leaped into the howling void.
The wind hit her like a wall of ice, freezing the salt spray on her eyelashes as the motorized winch paid out line at terrifying speed. The North Sea raged beneath her, a maw of churning whitecap waves and twisted metal. Below, the sinking submarine groaned like a dying beast, its hull plating buckling under the sheer tonnage of water flooding its engine rooms.
Ten feet above the churning foam, Emma fired her ascender’s emergency brake, swinging violently through the freezing rain toward the conning tower. Her boots slammed against the metal railing, jarring her teeth, but she kept her balance, her combat knife already drawn in her right hand.
"Daniel!" she yelled, fighting through the roar of water.
Daniel raised his head, blood caked around his hairline, his lips blue with hypothermia. When his eyes locked onto hers, a faint, ragged smile broke through his exhaustion. "You're... late, Emma."
"I took the scenic route," she snarled, dropping to her knees and slicing furiously through the thick nylon zip-ties binding his wrists to the steel grating.
The deck beneath them tilted another five degrees. The ocean was at their waists now, freezing Emma’s core and threatening to pull them both into the vortex created by the submarine's plunge. With a final desperate heave, the ties snapped. Daniel slumped into her arms, shivering uncontrollably.
"Can you climb?" Emma yelled into his ear.
"If you're holding the cable... I can do anything," he whispered hoarsely.
Emma wrapped the emergency extraction harness around Daniel’s chest, clipping him directly into her own line. She keyed her radio: "Viktor! Reel us in! Now! The sub is going down!"
High above on the rig, the winch motor engaged with a high-pitched whine. The steel cable snapped taut. For a terrifying second, the suction of the sinking sub held them fast, dragging them beneath the freezing foam. Emma held Daniel with every ounce of strength in her body, refusing to let the sea tear him away.

Then, with an explosive jolt, the cable tore them free of the water.
Beneath their dangling boots, the four-hundred-foot ballistic submarine slipped backward into the bottomless trench, letting out a final, deafening roar of venting steam and collapsing air pockets before vanishing into the pitch-black ocean.
