Chapter 58 - The Gilded Cage on Water

Emma held her hand up, signaling Daniel to halt. Slowly, deliberately, she lowered her pistol to the carpeted deck and kicked it away.

"Daniel. Stand down," she said quietly.

Daniel’s jaw clenched, but he followed her command, lowering his rifle to the deck.

Emma stepped up to the manual release panel beside the blast door. She punched in the override sequence, her eyes never leaving Vance’s cold, arrogant gaze. With a heavy pneumatic hiss, the titanium doors unlocked and slid open.

The smell of ozone and expensive cologne filled the room. Lily sobbed, pulling against the straps. "Mom! Don't listen to him! He's crazy!"

"Hush, little girl," Vance whispered, not moving the gun from her head. "Emma, you have proven to be far more troublesome than your pathetic father ever was. Francis had morals. Morals make a man predictable. You... you fight like an animal that has nothing left to lose."

"I have everything to lose," Emma said, taking a slow, calculated step forward into the room. "And that makes me infinitely more dangerous than you."

"Is that so?" Vance sneered. "You think you’ve uncovered a corporate conspiracy. You think this is about boardrooms and Swiss vaults. Do you know what the Vault of Saint-Germain really holds, Emma? It holds the original charters of the continental banking cabal that financed both sides of every war in Europe for two hundred years. The Syndicate doesn't just manage wealth—it dictates sovereign policy."

He gestured with his chin toward the laptop on the marble table. "And the key to activating the automated sovereign liquidation sequence requires the biometric signature of a direct descendant of the Laurent patriarch. Your father locked it before he was murdered. Evelyn thought she could bypass it. She was an idiot. But this child... her DNA completes the algorithmic chain."

"You will never touch her," Emma said, her voice dropping into a deadly, hollow whisper.

May you like

"I already have," Vance said coldly, pulling the hammer of his revolver back with a loud, metallic click. "Now enter the decryption key into that console, or watch your daughter bleed."
