Chapter 15 - Shadows in the Boardroom

At two o’clock in the afternoon, the executive boardroom on the forty-fifth floor of the Vance Tower in Manhattan was charged with electric tension.

Richard Vance stood at the head of the long glass table, adjusting his silk tie with nervous, jerky motions. His sister Victoria sat beside him, furiously typing on her tablet as eight senior board members and three corporate attorneys looked on in uncomfortable silence.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” Richard announced, raising his voice to project confidence he clearly did not feel. “The recent personal disruptions at the family estate are regrettable, but they do not negate the corporate structure. My mother, Margaret Vance, has designated Victoria and me as proxy executors. We are moving for an immediate vote of no-confidence against any outside claims on corporate leadership.”

“On what grounds, Richard?” an elderly board member asked skeptically. “Arthur Vance’s personal will clearly named—”

The heavy oak doors of the boardroom swung open with a resounding crash.

Emma walked in. She wore a tailored charcoal suit, her dark hair swept back, flanked on either side by Uncle Daniel and Judge Sterling. Behind them marched two forensic accountants carrying three identical steel briefcases.

The room fell into stunned, breathless silence. Richard’s face flushed crimson.

“Emma,” Richard sneered, trying to recover his posture. “This is a closed executive session. You have no legal standing to interrupt this meeting.”

“Sit down, Richard,” Emma said evenly.

She gestured toward the accountants, who clicked the briefcases open simultaneously and laid three thick stacks of financial audits before every single board member.

“What is this garbage?” Victoria snapped, glaring across the table.

“That ‘garbage’ is the forensic audit of your private offshore shell corporations over the last seven fiscal quarters,” Emma declared, her voice ringing with undisputed authority. “While my father was lying in a hospital bed dying of heart failure, you and Richard embezzled forty-two million dollars through dummy shell companies in the Cayman Islands to cover your failed real estate speculations.”

Gasps erupted around the table. The senior board members immediately began turning pages, their expressions darkening into outrage.

“You’re bluffing!” Richard stammered, sweat beading heavily on his forehead. “You can’t prove—”

“The transfer authorizations carry your digital signatures, Richard,” Judge Sterling chimed in, leaning forward. “And twenty minutes ago, federal prosecutors in the Southern District received unredacted copies. By five o'clock today, an injunction will freeze every personal account tied to your names.”

Emma stepped directly to the head of the table. She looked down at Richard until he instinctively stepped back, unable to meet her gaze.

“The board vote is cancelled,” Emma stated coldly. “Vance Holdings is entering an immediate forensic freeze until my return from Europe. If either of you sets foot in this building again, security will hand you directly to the marshals.”

Without waiting for an answer, Emma turned on her heel and strode toward the elevator.
