Chapter 86 - Scorch Marks on the Fjord

The silence that followed Julian’s fall was absolute, broken only by the distant, rhythmic hum of the failing backup generators and the low whimpering of Evelyn pinned beneath the wreckage far below. Emma did not look down again. She turned, her boots ringing against the surviving section of the catwalk, and descended the emergency fire escape with swift, purposeful strides.

When her feet hit the ground floor, Lily threw herself into Emma’s arms. Emma caught her, dropping to her knees and burying her face in the child’s tangled hair, holding her so tightly she could feel the rapid, frantic beat of Lily’s heart.

“You’re safe,” Emma whispered over and over, kissing her forehead, her cheeks, her hair. “It’s over, Lily. It’s over.”

“I saw him fall, Mom,” Lily whispered back, her voice remarkably steady for a child who had just witnessed the end of a dynasty. “He looked small.”

“He was small,” Daniel said, his voice strained as he limped toward them, holding a field dressing tightly against his bleeding shoulder. His face was gray with pain, but his eyes held deep relief. “Emma, the surface sensors just triggered. Two heavy transport helicopters have entered the valley airspace. Royal Norwegian Navy Special Operations and Interpol teams. They picked up the distress transponder Lily activated from the terminal.”

Emma stood, keeping Lily’s small hand firmly encased in her own. She walked over to the terminal pillar, reached down, and cleanly ejected the silver master drive containing the encrypted access keys to the seventy-billion-dollar Laurent offshore network.

Across the debris, Evelyn was still crying out, her voice growing hoarse. “Emma... please... the beam is crushing my legs... I’m your mother! You can’t leave me like this!”

Emma stopped beside the fallen matriarch. Evelyn’s immaculate silver hair was matted with dried blood and grease; her designer coat was torn to shreds. She looked up at Emma with wide, pleading eyes that held none of the vicious authority she had displayed on the day of Lily’s eighth birthday.

“You told Lily that bloodline was everything,” Emma said quietly, looking down at her. “You told her she was a nobody who deserved nothing. You took away her joy, her family, and her name. But blood didn't save Julian. And it won't save you.”

Emma leaned down and placed the severed master drive onto the concrete, two inches beyond Evelyn’s outstretched, trembling fingers.

“The authorities will be inside this room in five minutes,” Emma said. “You can spend your remaining years explaining to international prosecutors how Julian built his empire on blood money. Or you can tell them the truth about what you did to your own children. Either way, you are dead to us. Today, Lily’s real life begins.”

Without waiting for a response, Emma turned her back on her mother forever. Supporting Daniel’s uninjured side, with Lily walking proudly between them, the three of them walked toward the surface exit tunnel just as the blast doors were blown inward by the tactical entry teams.
