Chapter 7 - The Uninvited Arrival

Richard swallowed hard, exchanging a terrified glance with Sophia. Margaret smoothed down her silk gown, forcing her chin upward in an attempt to reclaim her haughty dignity.

"Go see who that is," Margaret commanded Richard.

Before Richard could take two steps toward the foyer, the heavy double doors swung open on their own.

Walking through the entryway was not a process server or a low-level courier. Walking into the marble foyer was Uncle Daniel Vance, tall, broad-shouldered, clad in a sharp charcoal three-piece suit, his silver hair neatly combed back.

Beside him walked Judge Jonathan Sterling, holding a thick, leather-bound legal dossier beneath his arm.

And between them, holding Daniel’s hand with quiet poise, was Emma.

Emma was dressed in a tailored navy blazer, her dark hair pulled back into an elegant knot. There was no trace of the quiet, wounded daughter who had fled the country club in tears the night before. Her posture was straight, her expression carved from solid granite, and her dark eyes were locked directly onto Margaret.

Behind them, seated quietly on the foyer bench with her coloring book, was eight-year-old Lily, safely out of earshot of the storm that was about to break.

"Daniel?" Margaret gasped, her voice cracking. "What... what are you doing in my house?"

"It’s not your house, Margaret," Daniel said calmly, his deep voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. "It hasn't been your house since 6:00 AM this morning."

Richard backed away against the dining table, knocking over a crystal water goblet that shattered onto the hardwood floor. "Judge Sterling... sir... what is the meaning of this?"

"The meaning, Richard," Judge Sterling said, stepping forward and dropping the heavy leather dossier onto the center of the dining table with a resounding thud, "is that you are all currently trespassing on the private real estate property of the St. Jude Lineage Trust."
