Chapter 16 - Flight to Geneva

The Gulfstream G650 climbed smoothly into the twilight sky over the Atlantic, the lights of New York shrinking into a brilliant constellation of amber and gold beneath them.

Inside the whisper-quiet cabin, Lily was fast asleep under a cashmere blanket, holding the small silver teddy bear Arthur had given her for her seventh birthday. Uncle Daniel was sitting two rows ahead, speaking in hushed murmurs on a satellite phone with their Swiss liaisons.

Emma sat by the window, staring into the dark expanse of clouds. In her lap lay Arthur’s original journal, which Daniel had retrieved from the safe before they departed.

She turned the pages, reading her father's familiar handwriting:

*“If you are reading this, my sweet Emma, you have faced the fire that I spent your entire life trying to shield you from. When Julian died on that mountain road in Switzerland, the local authorities ruled it a tragic collision caused by brake failure. But the mechanic who inspected the wreckage was silenced two days later. Julian had uncovered an international banking consortium—the St. Clair Syndicate. They were laundering war funds through private Swiss vaults, using our family's name as a sovereign shield.*

*Julian was going to blow the whistle. They murdered him for it. I took you, Emma, not just because I loved my brother, but because you were the sole owner of the Laurent cryptographic key. Without you, St. Clair could never unlock the syndicate's master ledger.”*

A chill shot straight through Emma’s veins. She snapped the journal shut.

Margaret’s frantic parting words suddenly rang in her mind with terrifying clarity: *“The people Arthur ran from—they’ll know Julian’s blood is alive!”*

Suddenly, the cabin intercom crackled to life. The pilot’s voice carried an unusual, razor-sharp edge of tension.

“Ms. Vance, this is Captain Miller. We’ve just received an unscheduled routing change from Swiss air traffic control. We were originally cleared for Geneva Cointrin, but they are instructing us to divert immediately to a military airfield outside Bern due to an 'unspecified security event' on the tarmac in Geneva.”

Uncle Daniel instantly stood up, his face hardening. “Miller, who signed that diversion order?”

A brief pause hung over the radio. “The clearance code came from the Swiss Federal Department of Justice... under the direct authorization of a Commissioner Lucien St. Clair.”
