Chapter 48 - The Unmasking

At seven minutes to eight, the master of ceremonies struck an antique silver chime. The room fell dead silent as Evelyn Vance stepped to the podium, flanked by two towering private security commanders in dark tactical suits.

"Esteemed members of the Directorate," Evelyn began, her voice smooth, cultured, and devoid of the shrill edge Emma had endured for decades. "The sudden... unfortunate demise of Lord Alistair Thorne has left our financial umbrella temporarily vulnerable. However, through my stewardship and the long-term containment of Arthur Laurent’s erratic assets, the path forward is clear."

She gestured toward a massive digital display behind her, which illuminated with a map of the global Laurent banking network.

"Tonight, we dissolve the archaic bloodline requirements of the Laurent trust. By sovereign proxy, I claim the executive master key, redistributing all liquidity directly into Directorate accounts."

"Your proxy is invalid, Evelyn," a clear, ringing voice cut through the silence.

The grand chamber froze.

Every head turned toward the sweeping marble staircase as Emma descended slowly, her gaze fixed entirely on the woman at the podium. Behind her, Eleanor followed like a silent, implacable sentinel of the old regime.

Evelyn’s face paled, the crystal glass slipping from her manicured fingers to shatter with a sharp crack upon the parquet floor. "You... you were terminated in Edinburgh."

"Did you really believe that the daughter of Arthur Laurent could be drowned in a puddle of Scottish water?" Emma said, her voice projecting with absolute authority as she reached the bottom step.

Murmurs of shock rippled through the assembled syndicate leaders.

"Arthur's daughter?" an elderly French financier gasped. "Arthur had no surviving heirs—Thorne confirmed the line was dead!"

"Thorne lied to you to protect his own skin," Emma proclaimed, pointing directly at Evelyn. "And this woman, who called herself my mother while pocketing your syndicate’s blood money, murdered Thorne the moment his back was turned to seize everything for herself."
