Chapter 45 - The Blood Covenant

As the trawler steamed south through international waters toward the Thames estuary, the cabin was silent save for the hum of the twin diesel engines. Daniel spread tactical schematics across the rusted steel table, his finger tracing the subterranean layouts of London's historic financial district.
"St. Jude’s Banking House is essentially a fortress disguised as an 18th-century private guild," Daniel explained, pointing to the structural blueprints. "Three underground levels. Biometric airlocks. And tonight, it will be guarded by Evelyn’s personal vanguard—the Iron Hand mercs she paid off using Thorne’s accounts."
Emma stared at the screen, where a dossier on Evelyn Vance was slowly decrypting. "Look at this entry from twenty-eight years ago," she said, her finger tapping the glass.
Eleanor leaned forward, her spectacles glinting in the pale fluorescent light. "Arthur's private journal logs..."
The decrypted text scrolled down: *Evelyn Vance demanded full custody of the child under threat of exposure to the Council. A bargain was struck: one hundred million dollars held in a Swiss blind trust, payable only upon Emma’s thirtieth year, provided the child is raised entirely devoid of pride, power, or heritage.*
Emma felt a bitter, freezing knot tighten in her chest. "She made my childhood miserable on purpose. The hand-me-down clothes. The cold dinners. The constant reminders that I was worthless and unloved. She wasn't just hiding me—she was breaking me. She wanted to make sure that if I ever discovered who I was, I would be too weak to fight back."
"And the birthday party?" Daniel asked quietly. "The insult to Lily?"
"A test," Emma whispered, realization washing over her like acid. "Evelyn knew Arthur was dying. She knew the inheritance countdown had begun. She humiliated Lily at the table to see if I had any fight left in me. She wanted to see if I would submit like I always did as a girl."
"She miscalculated," Eleanor said softly, placing a hand over Emma’s trembling fingers. "She thought cruelty produced obedience. She forgot that a mother will burn the world to ashes to shield her child."

Emma stood up, turning toward the window where the gray silhouette of the English coastline was beginning to loom through the mist. "Daniel, prepare the weapons. We aren't going to St. Jude’s to hide. We're going to crash their council."
