Chapter 43 - Out of the Black Water

The impact with the subterranean torrent knocked the wind from Emma's lungs in a shock of violent, numbing agony. The subterranean runoff was ferocious, dragging them through pitch-black limestone chutes carved out centuries before the city above was paved. Emma kept both arms clamped around Lily with absolute, desperate strength, refusing to let the current tear her daughter away even as jagged basalt scraped her shoulders and hips.
Suddenly, the suffocating enclosure widened. With a violent heave, the torrent expelled them into an expansive, arched brick culvert where the water slowed to waist-deep sludge.
Daniel surfaced three yards downstream, gasping for air and immediately lunging forward to haul Emma and Lily onto a slick masonry ledge. Eleanor followed moments later, coughing violently, her aristocratic poise battered but intact.
"Lily! Lily, look at me!" Emma choked out, brushing sodden hair from the child’s pale face.
Lily sputtered, coughing up foul runoff, but her eyes snapped open with ferocious clarity. "I held my breath, Mom. I counted to thirty like we practiced."
Tears hot against the biting cold spilled down Emma’s cheeks as she pressed her forehead to Lily's. "Good girl. You did so good, baby."
Daniel checked his sidearm, blowing water from the slide, his expression grim under the dim amber glow of a municipal maintenance lamp fifty feet ahead. "Evelyn thinks we’re frozen corpses in Thorne’s vault. We have maybe thirty minutes before her technical team runs a life-sign scan and realizes the vault didn't retain our biometrics."
"How could she do this?" Emma whispered, the raw betrayal finally tearing through her adrenaline. "She raised me. For twenty-six years, she acted like a bitter, penniless widow living in a broken-down brownstone. She counted pennies at the grocery store. She treated Lily like an outcast at her eighth birthday party... it was all theatre?"
Eleanor pulled a silver pendant from beneath her sodden silk shirt, revealing a concealed flash drive nestled inside the casing. "It was never theatre, Emma. It was a prison sentence. Evelyn Vance was never your mother. She was the Syndicate’s chief custodian. Arthur Laurent hid you with her under a sworn truce thirty years ago, paying her an astronomical retainer to keep you completely ignorant of your birthright. But when Arthur died, Evelyn saw her chance to seize the Laurent global treasury for herself."

"Then she made a fatal mistake," Emma said, rising to her feet despite the burning pain in her limbs, her voice dropping into an icy, unyielding register. "She left me alive."
