Chapter 55 - The Counter-Bargain

The yacht pulled away with terrifying speed, leaving Emma standing at the edge of the wooden pier, rain soaking her clothes and cold river spray stinging her eyes.
"Emma, hold!" Daniel grabbed her shoulder, pulling her back before she could dive into the freezing, propeller-churned water. "We can't swim after forty knots! Look up!"
A low, vibrating hum cut through the howling wind. Out of the fog above the river, a sleek, unmarked twin-rotor Dauphin helicopter banked sharply over the Deptford cranes, searchlights slicing through the downpour.
"Laurent private tactical," Daniel said, holding up his radio. "I called in the Dover rapid-response bird the second we left Bermondsey. We aren't out of this yet."
The helicopter hovered low over the empty berth, its side door sliding open to reveal two heavily armed Laurent loyalists throwing down fast-ropes. Within seconds, Emma and Daniel clipped into the harnesses and were hauled into the cabin as the bird pivoted south toward the mouth of the Thames.
Inside the cabin, Emma immediately grabbed the encrypted satellite handset. She patched directly into the maritime transponder signal of Vance’s fleeing vessel.
The line clicked.
"You are remarkably persistent, Emma," Alistair Vance’s voice came over the speaker, crisp and entirely unbothered by the storm. "Just like your father. But your timing is atrocious. My engineers just informed me that your 'master key' is chewing through our offshore reserves."
"Release my daughter, Vance," Emma said, her voice dropping into a register of chilling absolute resolve. "You think you're stealing from the Laurents. The moment that countdown hits zero, your entire network of shadow banks across Panama, London, and Zurich will be flagged as terrorist financing under international maritime law. You won't just be broke—every intelligence agency on the planet will hunt you to the ends of the earth."
Vance chuckled, though there was a razor-thin edge of irritation in his laugh. "A magnificent bluff. But you forgot one crucial detail, my dear. Lily isn’t just your daughter. She is the biological lock to the Vault of Saint-Germain. Her bloodline carries the specific genetic markers that bypass the Directorate's physical vault biometric locks. You think this was about money? Money is paper. The Vault contains the founding treaties that govern the European banking syndicates."
Emma heard Lily’s defiant voice in the background, sharp and furious despite her tears: "My mom is going to destroy you! Let go of me!"
"A feisty little creature," Vance said coldly. "If your transmission isn't halted within fifteen minutes, Emma, I won't wait to reach international waters. I will extract her genetic material right here in the salon—and dump what remains into the Channel."
The line went dead.
May you like
Emma turned to the helicopter pilot, her knuckles white. "Maximum speed. Intercept them before they reach the Strait of Dover."
