Chapter 95 - Blood and Ash

Davies nodded to the two marshals. "Eleanor Vance, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit wire fraud, interstate money laundering, and accessory after the fact in the concealment of corporate embezzlement. Medical personnel are waiting in the transport vehicle outside."

The marshals moved forward, their boots loud and heavy against the floorboards. When the first officer touched Eleanor’s arm to help her up, she recoiled violently, thrashing against his grip with the wild, desperate energy of a trapped animal.

"Don't touch me! You can't touch me! I am Eleanor Vance! This is Vance territory!" She lunged toward Emma, her manicured nails digging into the air, her face twisted into a mask of pure, unbridled malice. "Emma! Tell them! Tell them you forgive me! If you forgive me on the record, the civil suit drops! Emma, I gave you life! You owe me! *You owe me!*"

Emma didn't move. She didn't blink. She stood between Eleanor and Lily, an immovable wall of bone and resolve.

"I owe you nothing," Emma said, her voice dropping to a quiet, devastating whisper. "Not my daughter. Not my grief. Not my silence. When I walked out that door on Christmas night, I took every debt you ever held over my head and left it in the snow. You're on your own, Eleanor."

The marshals hoisted the thrashing matriarch to her feet. Her expensive silk blouse was torn at the shoulder, her pearl necklace catching on a marshal's radio strap and snapping. The white beads spilled across the hardwood, bouncing and skittering away into every dark corner of the room, rolling like tiny frozen drops of water into the floor vents and beneath the velvet couches.

As they dragged her through the foyer, her shrieks echoed off the twenty-foot ceilings, fading slowly as the heavy oak double doors of Vance Manor slammed shut behind her.

The house fell deathly still.

Claire looked around the cavernous parlor, her eyes taking in the peeling wallpaper, the dust motes dancing in the winter light, and the scattered pearls on the floor.

"It looks smaller," Claire murmured. "When we were kids, I thought this room was the whole world."

"It was a prison," Emma said, wiping her eyes and straightening her spine. "A prison painted in gold leaf."
