Chapter 40 - The Midnight Exchange

The wind howled across Casco Bay, spraying freezing sea salt against my skin.

"What did you do, Richter?" I whispered, my voice cutting through the storm.

"Arthur Vance was a very clever man," Richter said, stepping forward. "He knew that the only way to permanently dismantle our syndicate was to bring the bearer bonds directly to Geneva. But Julian Vance... Julian was always greedier than Arthur. Even from his jail cell, Julian made a second deal."

Through my hidden earpiece, Campbell's voice crackled frantically: *“Emma! Get down! We have an unscheduled vehicle approaching the dock gate! It's a federal prisoner transport—it's compromised!”*

Tires screeched on the icy asphalt behind me.

A heavy, reinforced van crashed through the perimeter gate, spinning to a halt twenty yards from where I stood. The side doors flew open.

Out stepped two men in black tactical gear, dragging Julian Vance with them. But Julian was no longer in chains. He was dressed in civilian clothes, a smirk of absolute triumph plastered across his weathered face.

"Did you really think Arthur's little federal marshals were incorruptible, Emma?" Julian shouted over the roar of the wind. "The syndicate owns politicians, judges, and prison wardens! Did you really believe your little Christmas rebellion could stop forty years of preparation?"

Richter nodded courteously toward Julian. "Welcome back, Herr Vance. You have delivered the transfer codes?"

"They're in my head," Julian replied, walking toward us with arrogant swagger, his eyes fixing on the briefcase in my hands. "And now, Emma, be a good daughter and hand over the key that Arthur stole from me."

"You used Eleanor," I said, my voice steady despite the chaos unfolding around us. "You let her rot in prison while you bought your way out."

"Eleanor was weak," Julian sneered. "She thought a few pearls and dinner parties meant power. Power is liquidity, Emma. Power is surviving. Now give me the briefcase, or Richter’s men will make sure you end up at the bottom of the harbor."

"I don't think so," I said quietly.

I pressed the small red release button concealed beneath the latch of the briefcase.
