Chapter 118 - The Broken Matriarch's Plea

At three o'clock that afternoon, a secure digital video link was established between the Montreal legal office and the conference booth at the Albany Federal Detention Center. Emma agreed to a three-minute transmission, on one condition: her daughter was not in the room, and the call was recorded for the official case file.
When the monitor flickered to life, Eleanor Vance looked completely unrecognizable.
The immaculate silver chignon she had maintained with militant perfection was reduced to unwashed, straggly clumps falling over her hollow cheeks. She wore an oversized orange institutional jumpsuit, devoid of the pearl necklaces, diamond brooches, and tailored silk suits that had formed her armor for forty years. Her hands shook violently against the steel tabletop.
"Emma?" Eleanor whispered, pressing her face close to the camera lens. Her voice was thin, reedy, and frantic. "Emma, my God, you answered. You have to tell them, Emma. Tell these animals who I am! They took my jewelry, they took my medication, they have me sleeping on a vinyl cot with common felons!"
Emma sat silently, her face like carved granite.
"Emma, please!" Eleanor sobbed, genuine panic finally breaking through her vanity. "I am your mother! I gave you life! Everything I did—even at Christmas—it was for the family! I had to be hard on you! I had to prepare you for how cruel the world is! Victor was circling us like a wolf, and I had to prove we weren't weak!"
"You called a six-year-old child a burden, Eleanor," Emma spoke at last, her voice terrifyingly calm. "You didn't do it to protect us. You did it because you were afraid she would inherit what you craved, and you couldn't stand the idea of something pure existing in your house."
"I was wrong!" Eleanor wailed, slamming her palms against the plexiglass on her side. "I was terrified! Victor threatened me! He said if I didn't break you, he would expose my offshore accounts! I was trying to save our home! Please, Emma... New Year’s is tomorrow. Don't leave your own mother in a dungeon for New Year’s! I’m begging you... just give me a second chance! Transfer twenty thousand dollars for my private bail! That’s all it takes! A second chance!"
Emma leaned forward, looking directly into the pathetic, desperate eyes of the woman who had terrorized her childhood.
"Do you remember what you told me five years ago when my husband died and I couldn't pay rent, Eleanor?" Emma asked.
Eleanor froze, her mouth hanging slightly open.
"You told me that weakness has a price, and debts must be paid in full," Emma said softly. "You have your answer. Enjoy your New Year in Albany."

With a single tap of her finger, Emma disconnected the feed, cutting off Eleanor’s screaming face into absolute blackness.
