Chapter 57 - The Matriarch’s Desperation

The voice coming through the terminal was cracked, trembling, and entirely stripped of the icy perfection Eleanor had worn like armor for half a century.

"Emma?" Eleanor’s voice sounded thin, frantic, like a woman speaking from the edge of an abyss. "Emma, are you there? I know you can access this terminal. Caleb’s tracker showed his last signal went dark at the cabin, but the Zurich ping just lit up the Champlain house."

I stared at the screen, my hand hovering over the microphone toggle. "Why are you calling me, Eleanor? Shouldn't you be with your lawyers, drafting another petition to take my daughter?"

A harsh, ragged breath came from the other end. "The lawyers are gone, Emma. Arthur... Arthur has frozen every domestic account. The banks in New York turned away my couriers an hour ago. The federal marshals have surrounded the Vance estate in Greenwich. They have warrants for tax evasion, wire fraud, conspiracy... everything."

"You built that empire on lies," I said, leaning toward the mic, each word cold and precise. "You called Lily a burden. You told a child she didn't belong at your table. Did you think there wouldn't be a reckoning?"

"You don't understand!" Eleanor wailed, her aristocratic composure completely shattering. "Arthur is using you! He has always used you! He didn't love Claire Montgomery—he destroyed her! He took you from her arms the day you were born to ensure Claire would never testify about his offshore kickbacks! And when Claire threatened to go to the authorities, he had her ship disappeared off the coast of Maine!"

Campbell stiffened beside me, his jaw tightening as he pulled out a secure tablet, rapidly searching historical federal maritime files.

"Eleanor is telling the truth about the wreck," Campbell whispered, showing me a screen detailing an unsolved boat explosion in 1990 involving Claire Montgomery.

"Emma, listen to me," Eleanor pleaded, her voice cracking with terror. "Arthur isn't in Zurich because he faked his death to protect the family. He is in Zurich because he is dying. His heart is failing, and under the terms of the Vance Foundation charter, the control of the entire trust defaults to the sole biological heir. If you claim the estate, he stays out of prison until he dies. But if you sign that ledger over to the marshals, he will die in a federal penitentiary."

"And you?" I asked. "Where do you go in all of this, Eleanor?"

"I am begging you, Emma," Eleanor sobbed—a sound I had never heard in twenty-five years of existence, a sound that made the hair on my arms stand up. "I will sign over the Greenwich estate to you. I will sign over the trusts, the jewelry, the heirlooms. I will give Lily everything she ever needs. Just do not give Arthur the root access. If you activate the Zurich key, his private security will arrive at Champlain to extract you by force. He doesn't want you as a daughter, Emma. He wants you as a legal puppet."
